YTD Raised: £160.77

We unite the resources, innovation and capabilities of technology companies to get the right conservation tools in the hands of those who need them. We’re bringing essential connectivity, communications and sensing devices to vast landscapes, enabling conservation managers to pre-empt and stop poaching, habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict. We’ve scaled to help recover 30+ species, including the endangered white and black rhino, across five long-running projects in Kenya, South Africa and Zambia. We aim to protect 10 million hectares of vital habitat and improve the lives of more than 10,000 local people. Can you help us get there?

"HELPING  SNOW LEOPARDS SURVIVE  IN THE WILD THROUGH COMMUNITY BASED CONSERVATION AND GOOD SCIENCE" With possibly less than 7,000 snow leopards remaining in the wild our goal is to help save this magnificent species survive for future generations. We are a charity run by unpaid volunteers so our aim is that over 95p in every £1 raised can go directly to funding conservation projects in snow leopard habitat in central Asia. The principal 'THREATS' to the snow leopard's survival in the wild are as follows:- The snow leopard can however be SAVED from extinction through the continued expansion of the 5 core project areas we support  EDUCATION: We fund Eco-Education camps where rural children learn about their mountain environment, eco-system, snow leopards and their prey and are provided with “top up” schooling by teachers. These children will grow up to be their communities’ leaders and their attitudes and behaviour will be key to the snow leopard’s survival.  LIVESTOCK INSURANCE: We help set up sustainable livestock insurance programmes. When a member of an insurance programme loses livestock to a carnivore attack the livestock is replaced, thus preventing any retribution killings of snow leopards by the herder taking place.  ECONOMIC ENTERPRISE: Women herders typically get pennies rather than pounds when they sell raw wool fleece to traders. However when raw wool is spun in to yarn it fetches five times more in price. We purchase spinning  wheels for the women herders, train them to spin wool and make handicrafts and then provide an international market place to sell their finished products. By doing this a herder family’s annual income can double or treble and the participating herder families agree that no snow leopards will be killed in the landscape of their rural community.  LIVESTOCK VACCINATION:  In some areas herders lose more livestock to disease rather than predator attacks. By paying for the vaccination of their livestock the herders agree not to kill any snow leopards even if they lose some livestock to predators.   SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH:  Until recently relatively little was known about the behaviour of snow leopards living in the wild. We support the first long term scientific research camp based in the Tost Valley in the South Gobi. By monitoring population densities of snow leopards and their prey we can judge how best to support their survival in the wild. 'Every donation made to snow leopard conservation is important and gratefully received. Thank you for joining us in our mission to save this magnificent species from extinction, and helping some of the poorest people living on the fringes of the world improve their livelihoods.' Yarrow (UK, XR22094) Browse events

YTD Raised: £160.11

Most of us are used to taking control of our own lives – deciding how we want to live. For people with learning disabilities, this isn’t always the case. At Yarrow, it is. Now in our 24th year, we constantly push boundaries of conventional support so that people - including those with profound disabilities like Lydia - remain independent. Lydia doesn’t use speech. But she has always enjoyed looking at photographs. So Yarrow has gathered together her favourites and put them on a computer, along with pictures that Lydia has taken herself with a digital camera. Next up, Lydia was introduced to a big red switch to use as a mouse to help her click through her pictures.  It took Lydia just three sessions with Yarrow’s support for her to make the connection that pressing the big red switch made the pictures change.  Lydia’s photos are organised into categories - activities she enjoys, holidays, day trips, favourite cafes and shopping, so she can choose what she looks at.  She now uses the photos to tell us what she wants to do and to live the life she wants to lead.  You can see Lydia using the big red switch in the photo gallery.
