Boomerang started its journey as a homeless/poverty organisation, helping citizens that live on the streets who still deserve a little dignity, however the journey developed moving in different directions but still keeping its identity with regards to tackling poverty. Boomerang Cardiff has been developed with the community and volunteers, many volunteers are driven by previous lived experience of homelessness, poverty and social isolation. Following a period of falling on hard times and experiencing homelessness as a self-employed businessman, founder Paul Gwilym began to work with the local community, creating and funding the project himself Under the umbrella of Boomerang Cardiff, there are three sections to the project: Homelessness/Prevention of Homelessness Poverty, In work poverty/Critical Living Conditions Social Isolation Boomerang Cardiff focus on the needs of the community from all suburbs of Cardiff and work with the community in a number of ways; as a charitable organisation we work hand in hand with the community to support/prevent homelessness, poverty, critical living conditions and social isolation. We aim to help and support local people and families that are down on their luck, quickly and efficiently, working to promote, benefit and empower the inhabitants of Cardiff without distinction of sex, sexual orientation, race or of political, religious or other opinions in a common effort to enhance living standards. We offer practical and emotional support to blind and visually impaired Londoners. Join our amazing community Every pound we receive and every action you take helps us reach more people with sight loss. Our Sight Support workers offer emotional and practical support to over 1000 blind and partially sighted people. But the need is much greater: in our community there are still thousands of people who are left alone to deal with the impact of visual impairment. That is why we need your support: to help us reach every single person that is feeling isolated. Each gift we receive will ensure we can offer support, advice and reassurance to people with a visual impairment when they need it most.
Wherever the Need is the only UK charity that puts sanitation first. Clean water is also vitally important to help save lives, but without efective sanitation in place, water supplies continue to become contaminated. Its not just us that says this - research has shown that the installation of ‘improved sanitation’ shows a reduction in illness by an average of 32%, whereas an improved water supply only does so by 6%. We provide ecologically sustainable composting toilets which are long-lasting, and provide valuable fertiliser which can be used on crops. With proper sanitation in place, we then make sure there is clean drinking water available. With both sanitation and water in place, peoples health vastly improves, enabling them to maintain employment and stay in education. Our last step is to create livelihood programmes where they are needed, so people have the opportunity for sustained employment. Good health and an income leads to a route out of poverty, and that is what we are all about!
Community Awareness raises funds to support local families with children of primary school age. We help them provide a safe and loving environment for their children in which they can thrive. This support takes many forms - provision of school uniform and essential clothing, educational and emotional support for those with mental health issues, basic hygiene supplies, transport in rural areas to access essential services. We are viewed as a form of emergency funding for those in deepest need - we act swiftly through health and education professionals to provide what's needed fast. We're proud to say that we keep our overheads to a minimum and over 95% of funds raised go straight to those who need our support.
