The Derby & District branch of Samaritans opened in January 1961 and ever since it has operated as a self-financing, independent charity.Samaritans are available 24 hours a day to provide emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of emotional distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide. The recession is likely to have contributed to the first increase in suicides in a decade. Without action, research predicts that suicides will continue increasing.
