FFLAG (UK, 1079918) Browse events

YTD Raised: £260.00

FFLAG is a national organisation that promotes the well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their families and friends. We offer support and information through our confidential helpline and email answering service. All calls are answered by parent volunteers who have themselves got an LGBT child. We have been supporting LGB people and their families since 1993 and have recently been joined by parents able to support transgender people and their families. FFLAG’s website receives 900 to 1,000 visits a month from people looking for help and information and we support hundreds of families and individuals every year. Many parents won’t be expecting it when their child comes out to them. Even the most caring of parents can find it difficult to adjust to the idea that their daughter or son is LGBT. FFLAG is here to support those parents and to help them build an open, honest and loving relationship with their child. We know that many LGBT people find it hard to come out to their parents and we also offer support to them based on our years of experience. We have supportive literature and booklets; we give talks to groups, schools and businesses; we attend Prides and conferences both in the UK and Europe. We signpost callers to support groups and advice, including a network of local parents’ support groups across the UK. If you or someone you know needs our support, please call our confidential helpline 0845 652 0311 or email [email protected]. Please visit our website www.fflag.org.uk for lots more information. Thank you for reading this and we hope we can count on your support to help keep FFLAG flying.

Omushana, Sunshine for Children (UK, 1150629) Browse events

YTD Raised: £260.00

Omushana, Sunshine for Children aims to enhance the lives of children in the villages around the mountain gorilla reserves in South-west Uganda. The essence of Omushana is to make a positive contribution to children’s lives by improving their educational opportunities, welfare, confidence and enjoyment. We achieve this primarily by providing and delivering equipment and grants to schools and children's groups in the Mgahinga and Bwindi areas of Uganda. Every penny donated to Omushana through this site will go directly to fund our projects.  We are a small charity with very few admin costs and these are covered by the Trustees and other sources.  So you can be sure that your donation will directly benefit the children of Uganda.  If you have a particular type of project you would like to support (education, health, sport, the most needy/vulnerable children etc) then please leave a note and we will make sure that your donation goes towards an appropriate project.  And if you leave your contact details we will send you an update of your donation in action. Please note - we do not sponsor individual children.  The projects we support benefit large numbers of needy children throughout the communities in which we work. Thanks to the generous support of a large number of friends - in the last 12 months Omushana has constructed a community Library & IT Training Centre (opening September 2013), assisted with classroom provision and furnishing, delivered laptops, over 1500 text books and reading books and more than 5000 pens and pencils to more than 10 schools, given grants and equipment to assist two children's support groups, aided the development of mother's groups and co-operatives aiming to directly benefits children in the community and supported the Bwindi Academy Football Club. We are currently supporting the establishment of a Vocational Institute to provide local training for youths in the communities around Bwindi Forest. 'Omushana' means 'Sunshine' in Rukiga, the local language where the charity was founded. Both Rukiga and English appear in the full title of the charity (Omushana, Sunshine for Children) because our project is based on friendship and co-operation between supporters in both Uganda and UK. Omushana also works in partnership with other organisations or charities which share our vision. Such co-operation is particularly valuable in the provision and transportation of equipment from UK.
