The adventure playground site is on a playing field attached to an old granite primary school which the charity manages at a peppercorn rent from the local council. The dream to open the first and only adventure playground in Cornwall has started to become a reality this year with funding from the Big Lottery Fund which has enabled staff to be employed to open the site up to local school-aged children and families all year round. An adventure playground can best be described as a space dedicated to children’s play, where skilled playworkers enable and facilitate the ownership, development and design of that space physically, socially and culturally by the children playing there. Based on well-established practices from playwork and community development weinvolve children, youth, parents, volunteers, carers and a wide range of members from the local community in working together to design, construct and maintain interesting and adventurous play structures.
