We work particularly with groups underrepresented in this field, including girls and young people from low income families. We support them with a 4 year programme of activities including academic help, trips to universities, careers insights days and work experience. In 2005 Dr Tony Sewell, a teacher, teacher trainer and Nottingham PhD alumni, took action to intervene in the dramatic underachievement of young black boys. Boys who had academic potential, yet which was at risk of being unfulfilled. Ten years later this first cohort now, in fulfilling careers, act as ambassadors for the programme, having studied the likes of biochemistry and economics at university. This model formed the basis of the core philosophy of Generating Genius- there are now several key areas in which we strive to deliver a positive impact: confidence, career aspiration, academic success, knowledge of the higher education system and post - school options.Young people gain an insight into how STEM subjects are applied to real world challenges like clean water access, the space race and food security. We inspire with hands on events in which students see STEM in action - but importantly also provide practical support to turn that inspiration into the fulfilment of ambition.
