Haiti Help (UK, SC042062) Browse events

YTD Raised: £190.00

In 2009, three nurses from Fife, Lou Davidson, Elaine Stark and Carole Hatten, volunteered to go LaGonave, an island off the coast of Haiti, to immunise children in remote villages. Although their initial focus was on treating the children in these villages, the trip allowed them to visit an orphanage; a building known locally as the "poor house of elderly people" and the hospital. The nurses were so shocked at the conditions encountered at all three locations that they decided to establish the charity "Haitihelp" to try and raise funds to improve the lives of these people. Haitihelp's aim is to financially support projects that will improve the quality of life for the people on the island. Not content with just providing financial aid, Lou Elaine and Carole regularly, through self funding, visit LaGonave to utilise their nursing skills and see first hand the benefits that the Charity's financial support is bringing to the people of the island. In 2013, aided by the support from Haitihelp, the orphaned children were successfully moved to a newly constructed and well equipped children's village . There has been a new hospital built and a new fit for purpose house for the elderly sourced. Despite the success already achieved HaitiHelp recognises that there is still a lot more work to do and the nurses continue to work and fund raise to support and maintain these projects. With a strong belief that the only long term sustainability for the people already helped is to provide them with the resources and tools to help themselves, current projects are focused on the charity providing crops and livestock. This will allow the local community to produce their own food, help boost the local economy and build classrooms to aid education. All money donated goes directly to these projects and nothing is used for personal gain.

YTD Raised: £190.00

Disability Sports Humber is the biggest disability sports charity in the Humber area supporting 100s of disabled people weekly in sport. We so often see how much sport changes people's lives from improving their mental health to giving some time to rest for carers. We work in a number of different ways including: Giving grants to disabled people to keep playing sport, for example a grant for a special sports wheelchair/powerchair Helping to fund the clubs so they can keep open to make sure there will always be sport for all in the area. Holding events to showcase what disability sports can do, whilst also fundraising. Disability sports in the Humber area has a funding gap of over £30,000 a year which we try to bridge with all the work we do, however we need the public’s support to be able to keep 100s of disabled people playing the sports they love so we can continue changing their lives.
