(AU, 71160405103) Browse eventsOur main mission is to support the orangutan and forest conservation efforts initiated by Dr. Biruté Mary Galdikas and Orangutan Foundation International (OFI) in Kalimantan, Borneo. Orangutan Foundation International Australia (OFIA) has two core campaigns; caring for orphaned and displaced orangutans at the OFI Care Centre in Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo; and, securing habitat for their future release. We currently help care for over 330 orangutans in our Care Centre. These orangutans have been orphaned due to the destruction of their habitat caused by illegal logging, mining and palm oil plantations. Without the OFI Care Centre, these apes would be homeless and most likely dead. We think of the Care Centre as a half-way house for orangutans, providing them with food, shelter, love and attention until they are old enough to be released back into the wild. However, for that eventual release to be successful, we need to secure land to ensure they have a safe place to live. Through The Orangutan Legacy Forest project, OFIA is purchasing and protecting land in Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo, keeping wild orangutans safe and creating a much needed sanctuary for the release of rehabilitated orangutans.
