We work particularly with groups underrepresented in this field, including girls and young people from low income families. We support them with a 4 year programme of activities including academic help, trips to universities, careers insights days and work experience. In 2005 Dr Tony Sewell, a teacher, teacher trainer and Nottingham PhD alumni, took action to intervene in the dramatic underachievement of young black boys. Boys who had academic potential, yet which was at risk of being unfulfilled. Ten years later this first cohort now, in fulfilling careers, act as ambassadors for the programme, having studied the likes of biochemistry and economics at university. This model formed the basis of the core philosophy of Generating Genius- there are now several key areas in which we strive to deliver a positive impact: confidence, career aspiration, academic success, knowledge of the higher education system and post - school options.Young people gain an insight into how STEM subjects are applied to real world challenges like clean water access, the space race and food security. We inspire with hands on events in which students see STEM in action - but importantly also provide practical support to turn that inspiration into the fulfilment of ambition. This is achieved through the following goals: • To act as the charitable arm of the Company, giving members of the Company an avenue to meet their charitable undertakings as stipulated in their commitments as Freemen and Liverymen of the Company. • To give members of the Company the opportunity to be actively involved in the charitable engagements, not merely through the giving of donations. • To support world trade, education and other linked causes particularly with City of London connections. The current Trust policy is to allocate all regular donations received from Company members towards that year’s charitable effort. The walk on 13 September 2017accords with these goals since it is City based and gives members the opportunity to contribute but also to be directly involved.
