YTD Raised: n/aThe first Sea Cadet unit was established in 1854 at Whitstable in Kent, created by communities wanting to give young people instruction on a naval theme. Traditionally old seafarers provided training while local businessmen funded the Unit Headquarters. The tradition of community - based Sea Cadet Units continues today with 400 across the UK each with charitable status enabling them to raise funds to meet their running costs. All Units are members of the Sea Cadet Corps and are governed by the national charity MSSC - the Marine Society & Sea Cadets. We work partnership with the Royal Navy under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and receive corporate support from commercial shipping companies and the Maritime sector. Our core purpose is to celebrate Britain's maritime heritage and contribute to its future development by supporting young people as Sea Cadets. The History of Sea Cadets in Crawley at TS Cossack S.C.C The first person to sign up as a member of the newly formed Crawley Sea Cadets was Brian Redmond of Mitchells Road Three Bridges, Commanding Officer at the time Lt C Edwards with Sub Lt G Burfoot as his Second in command ran the unit from Southgate community Hall. A total of twenty five boys enrolled on the opening night which followed a recruitment march through Crawley town centre on the previous weekend by the combined bands and cadets of Horley and Reigate units ON April 24th of 1965 TS Cossack moved to its own premises in London Road on the site where the towns leisure complex now stands. TS Cossack's dated building was needed to make way for Crawley's redevelopment plan and following negotiations with Crawley Borough Council TS Cossack was moved to its current site in a purpose built building in Longmere Rd where we can be found today
