Ackworth Riding for the Disabled Association work with people with a range of disabilities and reasons for taking part. The group provides tuition, training and support for people with disabilities to ride. Without this support most of our participants would be unable to take part in horseriding. The core purpose of the charity is to benefit the health and well-being of people with disabilities ...through the delivery of effective and life-enhancing therapy, the opportunity to learn new skills and achieve personal goals and ambitions, and the chance to enjoy taking part in a social activity that promotes general well-being. We act to ensure that no person is excluded from our activity where there is space for them and the appropriate equipment and support is made available. To bring people together within communities to create local support mechanisms. This is a free service that is accessible to everyone. Why the community needs this charity Our project provides an innovative solution to the real problem of rural isolation. Loss of services in rural communities can leave residents without any means of connecting with each other, this can lead to low mood and loneliness. Accessing information is almost impossible in these situations. Our project creates a social focus with a free mobile community cafe/information centre, which offers support and the chance to meet and talk with fellow residents in the same situation. Results and outcomes Starting in 2003 as a voluntary organisation, with just one small caravan, demand for our project service has caused our project to grow enormously. We are now a registered charity with two caravans and a mobilitiy bus visiting around 80 rural communities each year. We now also run Golden Age Fairs, these alone have lead to over 1000 individuals that have been linked into services that have improved their health and wellbeing. Our aim is to raise awareness of Type 2 Diabetes and to raise vital funding for The Michael Clements Diabetes Centre at Watford General Hospital. Michael Green was a kind and loving husband, father and friend to all, greeting everyone with his smile and warmth. It was devastating for his family and friends when he died, but through this charity, we can prevent others from suffering the same loss and thus create something good from something so tragic. With the first £10k that was raised, we built an educational dietetic kitchen at the diabetes centre at Watford General Hospital as a resource for current diabetes patients and others within our community. Our next major projects include: • providing specialist nurse training at the diabetes centre at Watford General Hospital • providing more specialst equipment for the diabetes centre. We are also in the early stages of producing a recipe book, with dishes that have been specially donated from well-known chefs, with a focus on health and diabetic-friendly foods. The book will also have useful information about diabetes, with some personal accounts from those who have lived with, and reversed their diabetic conditions...truly remarkable accounts! There are many other events planned for the coming months so please check back here regularly to see what's happening. You can also visit our website for news and for updates on our latest activities. Through collaborations with West Herts NHS Trust, The Mayor of St Albans, local business sponsorship and our trusty team of dedicated volunteers, we will continue to spread the word that a healthy lifetstyle will help to prevent Type 2 diabetes. www.michaelgreenfoundation.org Thank you for your kind donation - it is greatly appreciated. ____________________________________________________________ Sunday 13th July British 10K - London Run We have a number of runners taking part in this year's British 10K on behalf of The Michael Green Foundation.
