The Friends of Nixon was established to provide a direct route of support for the Nixon Memorial Hospital in Sierra Leone. The hospital is in an area of endemic poverty in one of the most deprived countries in the world. It faced partial destruction and temporary closure during the Sierra Leone civil war between 1991 and 2002 and recently encountered further tragedy during the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. Despite these challenges the hospital continues to survive in order to provide essential healthcare to its community who have huge unmet health needs. Our trustees consist of a group of individuals from both Sierra Leone and the UK (many ofwhom have worked at the hospital) who have a desire to support the work of thehospital and facilitate improvements in the healthcare it provides. We achieve this through funding training opportunities, community health work, infrastructure projects (most recently the new water well and pump) and essential medicine provision. We take in unwanted and ill-treated GSD's (GSD crosses and other breed where necessary) and provide shelter, care and medical treatment (if required) until we can find them a secure and loving home. We promote responsible dog ownership and provide an aftercare advice, support and guidance service for the new owner. All prospective new owners will be home checked. This is to ensure that the home is safe for our dogs and so that we can get a better idea as to which of our dogs will match your circumstances and lifestyle. We also promote spaying and neutering to prevent more unwanted puppies. The GGSDR does not receive any government funding and relies entirely on volunteers, fundraising and charitable donations.
