We are the Charity for the Community. We help people from all walks of life by providing advice on many issues; employment, consumer, debt, benefits, health, tax, housing and immigration. This year is our 75th Anniversary - we were established the day after World War Two broke out. In those days, we helped to trace missing relatives, and gave advice on rationing. Our volunteers pulled together to help neighbours and friends, and we operated from a horse box, as there was nowhere else available! This commitment still remains today. From the debt issues in the 1980’s, to the complex benefit systems today, we are always on hand to assist the community with the issues that matter most. We are the first place people in Birmingham go when they do not know where to turn. Many of our clients are in crisis, and can be at risk of losing their homes, jobs or families. Our advice can mean the difference between putting food on the table, or going hungry. We also help sections of society in special need - people affected by cancer come to us for advice on how to financially adjust, people with mental health issues come to us for help with complicated forms and procedures. We provide advice at a time when people need it most, and empower them so that they can lead a better quality of life. Our advice changes lives. We are: independent, impartial, confidential and free. Last year, we helped over 30,000 people, which was achieved with the help of our 230 passionate volunteers. We value diversity, promote equality and challenge discrimination. Our mission is to provide free, accurate, relevant and helpful advice, to all those who seek our assistance, in a safe, non-discriminatory environment.

Cycling Without Age Scotland (UK, SC048128) Browse events

YTD Raised: £35.00

Thank you for visiting our profile page on MyDonate.  Cycling Without Age Scotland is an inter-generational project to help isolated and/or elderly people from care homes or their own home get outdoors, socialise and feel good about themselves. We aim to transform the lives of elderly people, bringing them closer to the environment through outdoor trips on Trishaws with local volunteer pilots (Trishaw drivers). We focus on recruiting young people as volunteer pilots, but volunteers are not exclusively young people. We help to build bridges between generations and reinforce trust and respect. Accessing the outdoors socially, creates happiness among elderly people by providing them with an opportunity to remain an active part of society and the local community. Trishaw rides give elderly people the right to wind in their hair, to experience their local community, see nature from a Trishaw and giving them an opportunity to tell their story in the environment where they have lived their lives.  Please donate to support our cause.Life does not end when you turn 75. Life unfolds at all ages, young and old, and can be thrilling, fun, sad, beautiful and meaningful. Cycling Without Age is about letting people age in a positive context – fully aware of the opportunities that lie ahead when interacting in their local community. Volunteer pilots encourage meaningful social contact between the generations, actively build relationships with isolated and vulnerable elderly people and offer opportunities for them to tell their stories and socialise in their local communities. Volunteers learn new skills like Trishaw maintenance, enhance existing skills and social skills.Slow cycling is a key principle of Cycling Without Age Scotland and ensures pilots, passengers, pedestrians and other road/path users have good experiences when being part of or meeting a Cycling Without Age Scotland local group. We tell stories and listen to stories while on the Trishaw, helping to create a multitude of new relationships: between generations, among the elderly, between pilots and passengers, nursing home employees and family members. Relationships build trust, happiness and quality of life. Pro Bono Economics (UK, 1130567) Browse events

YTD Raised: £35.00

Pro Bono Economics  matches volunteer professional economists with charities, providing free help to measure performance and understand charity impact and value. Our aims are: PBE was set up in 2009 by Martin Brookes, Director of the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, and Andy Haldane, an Executive Director at the Bank of England, when they identified an opportunity for economists to help charities. The Director, Sue Holloway, is a former government economist and has been Director of the charity since September 2010. A small core team of three staff manage projects and support the relationship between the charity and the volunteers. They are funded by grants from trusts and foundations, ad hoc donations from generous individuals and regular giving by individual economists. To date we have received applications from over 130 charities from all over the UK. We have had exploratory conversations with some 60 more, which in themselves have, we are told, been extremely helpful to the charities. Over 270 economists have registered with us and we have already used more than 130 of them on projects. About 35 projects have been completed or are in the final stages. These are for charities ranging from the very small (e.g. Fair Pensions and Foundation Training Company) to the very large (Barnardo’s).  Projects include advice on collection of the data required to do economic analysis in the future, and social cost benefit analyses of particular programmes. All the analysis is peer reviewed by experts and published on the PBE website. At any point in time the central team is managing around 40 projects at various stages in the process.  Our approach is to be as helpful as possible while maintaining high standards of rigour, transparency and consistency. Our independence and the quality of our volunteers makes the analysis we produce credible with charities and funders alike.
