Reading Spots, Ghana (UK, 1166734) Browse events

YTD Raised: £20.00

The core idea of Reading Spots is that we provide a vehicle through which we can fund the creation of libraries within rural communities. There is a complete lack of reading material of any sort in rural areas of Ghana, and the enthusiasm for reading is astonishing. We will often fund small libraries within schools on the condition that the facilities are shared with all local schools and the wider community. If the library is effectively used and the local chiefs or authority agree to fund the salaries of libraries, we will extend the library to a larger facility. Together with our Ghanaians colleagues, we have many plans for the projects including free literacy classes for adults, books clubs and creative writing clubs and competitions for children and adults, with a website being planned to facilitate sharing of writing and ideas about reading with others within Ghana and England. We have so far created one Reading Spot in the Messiah International School in Abofour, which is used by over a hundred members of the local community as late as 9pm at night. We are currently fundraising for a large community library in Akumaden, a project that will be managed by James Dugger, Director of the nearby Dreamland School. The name 'Reading Spot' derives from the Ghanaian love of the name 'spot' as a bar or hang out- they are seen across Ghana. We hope that the Reading Spots are seen as community centres actively promoting community cohesion, literacy and creativity.

YTD Raised: £20.00

Ongar Music Club was founded in 1975 in the small market town of Ongar in Essex by a group of local music-enthusiasts. They presented numerous concerts, and in 1984 founded the prestigious Essex Young Musician of the Year Competition, under the generous patronage of John Lill CBE. A great many past prize winners have gone on to enjoy successful professional careers. In addition to presenting this renowned competition, the club continued to present concerts, and in 2019 launched a series of lunchtime concerts called Soundbites! With the restrictions of the Covid Pandemic the club adapted their programme schedule, and moved their concerts online. LIVE LOUNGE was created, a season of concerts exclusively on YouTube, not only for members and friends of Ongar Music Club, but also as a Community outreach programme for Care Homes in the UK, bringing music into the homes of all those who are isolated due to Covid restrictions. Many famous artists have performed in concert and given musical talks for the Club over the years. These include Dame Eva Turner, Sir Peter Pears, Stephen Kovacevich, Denis Matthews, Steven Isserlis, Richard Baker, Fritz Spiegl, Benjamin Grosvenor and The Fairer Sax. The Club was also instrumental in the formation of Ongar Jazz Club. It is this diversity of activity which has ensured the Club’s ongoing success.
