Since its formation in 1953 the League of Friends of the Kent & Canterbury Hospital CIO has raised nearly £7m, providing extra comforts and high calibre medical equipment for the benefit of patients, staff and vistors. Examples of the many and varied gifts are: an instrument set for the state of the art Da Vinci Surgical Robot, electric patient hoists for Occupational Therapy, 173 bedside tables for all in-patients, 113 electric Huntleigh profiling beds, numerous waiting room tables and chairs, bladder scanners and a recent contribution of £272,000 to the Hospital Trust’s appeal for digital mammography equipment. In addition, the League has funded the refurbishment of the Hospital’s hydrotherapy changing cublicles and jointly funded the creation of a sensory garden for Neuro Rehabilitation patients and their families The League also runs four highly successful hospital shops and a daily ward trolley round, managed by a small team of paid staff and 90+ dedicated volunteers. Other services include a daily Hospital Radio broadcast, ward library trolley round and a mealtime companion service, all of which exemplify our commitment to serve patients, staff and visitors to the hospital. Nine City and village groups form the backbone of the League and meet regularly to raise money from local events. Our main fundraising event is the annual joint Summer Fair in August which always takes place on the Saturday before the August bank holiday weekend, where hospital staff, League members and the public come together for an entertaining fundraising afternoon.
