Burley In Wharfedale Scout and Guide Group (UK, 1025482) Browse events

YTD Raised: £315.00

We’ve built the Eiffel Tower.... .......now we are wanting to build a new headquarters Who are we? Burley Scouts and Guides activities include all aspects of scouting and Guiding for children between 6-18, and encourges work and help in the local community What are we doing? The Group wants to replace its headquarters building off Peel Place.  Why are we building a new HQ Scouting and Guiding is thriving in Burley: we have 300 young people who are able to take park in activities, and a further 150 on the waiting list,  since we lack sufficient capacity to take them.    The present building is old, has been extended three or four times, is hugely inefficient on energy use and lacks modern facilities.  It’s still standing and functioning because the Group has maintained it well but it won’t last for ever and we want to replace it before we face a crisis.  The last serious consideration of the need was ten years ago and a decade has passed. By careful design, we can increase capacity without greatly increasing the building footprint for the Group HQ. A feasibility study has shown that we can do this, improve access and parking and still retain a grassed area for outdoor activities.  That is all within our own site; the community field will not be affected. Community Use Those of you involved in other organisations within our very active and growing village will know the pressure on venues.  So we aim is to be able to offer good facilities for community use at times when our units are not meeting. Tour de France Eiffel Tower The Tour de France provided great opportunity to raise the profile of our work and the Group built a 7m high tower as a tribute to the great race and to mark the start of its fund raising campaign http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/11311193.VIDEO__The_Burley_in_Wharfedale_Eiffel_Tower_is_unveiled_for_Tour_de_France_weekend/?ref=rss http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/main-topics/general-news/towering-tribute-1-6703032 http://www.francetvinfo.fr/monde/video-tour-de-france-la-grande-bretagne-prete-a-accueillir-la-petite-reine_639797.html If you feel that the scouts and guides dererve a contribution towards their fund raising efforts, please feel free to make a donation

YTD Raised: £315.00

German Shepherd Dog Rescue is a rescue run by a dedicated group of volunteers with a love of German Shepherds, giving their time and devotion to the welfare of this wonderful breed. We rescue and rehome German Shepherds across the country. GSDR alway has and always will operate a NO DESTRUCTION POLICY because we believe that all dogs deserve a good life. We will find the right home for all the dogs that come into our care no matter how long it takes. We will never turn away a dog because of age, medical history or temperament as long as we have the funds to help. GSDR is also able to offer help and advice on all aspects of owning a GSD. We are encountering record numbers of German Shepherds requiring our help and we need to raise funds so that we can help more dogs. Our biggest expenses are commercial kenneling to keep dogs safe until new homes are found and veterinary costs. All monies raised are used to help the dogs needing our assistance. Gillian Fabb Memorial Fund (UK, 276008) Browse events

YTD Raised: £315.00

The Gillian Fabb Memorial Fund was set up following Gillan's death from liver cancer at the age of 8years. It aims to provide money for research into improved methods of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of cancer in children and has raised nearly £200 000. Money is raised in many ways with family and friends, especially Gillian's three sisters, playing a major role. Initially, all money went to The Institute of Child Health, attached to Great Ormond Street Hospital. Many pieces of equipment were purchased and important research programmes were financed. In 1995, the particular laboratory we had been supporting was closed but we became aware of a similar need for funds at The Dept. of Paediatric Oncology at The Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital. The Trustees visited the Unit in 1996, were impressed by the work being carried out and pledged our ongoing support for this research. We work hard to raise funds and are gratified to see how much progress has been made over the past 20 years. The labs have excellent links with other depts. at the Institute of Cancer Research and are working with them to develop new, more effective drugs, targeted specifically for childhood cancers, with far fewer side-effects than existing treatments. Apart from accidents, cancer, including leukaemia, is still the greatest killer of children today in the UK so we must not become complacent as we see improved recovery figures-with improved resources for research into diagnosis, treatment and prevention, the situation could improve still further. Every penny donated to the Fund goes to research-nothing is ever taken out for administration purposes.
