The South Devon Railway Trust is an educational charity, whose aims are to advance public education in the history and development of railway transportation systems in particular by the preservation, operation and exhibiting of railway vehicles systems and equipment and to foster and support railway preservation. The Trust operates a seven mile former Great Western Railway branch line, built in 1872, which runs along the stunning valley of the River Dart between Buckfastleigh and Totnes. We run steam trains with heritage rolling stock and offer a wonderful all day, all weather attraction and educational experience for families and people of all ages. The Trust operates and maintains a fleet of historic locomotives and rolling stock dating from the early part of the 20th century enabling visitors to experience rail travel as it used to be. It also has a museum in the original 1872 Goods Shed which presents a picture of the Ashburton branch line throughout its life. This takes it from the very first appearance of the railway in South Devon, through the broad gauge era, the Great Western and British Railways eras to the current day heritage of the South Devon Railway. The story is told through a wide range of artefacts, including photographs, posters and timetables. The only surviving broad gauge locomotive, Tiny, takes pride of place, while a small tank engine, Ashley, which spent its working life at Exeter Gas Works, shows children of all ages how a steam engine works. Track and signalling are not forgotten, with several interactive exhibits. The work of the Trust relies hugely on a dedicated group of volunteers who carry out a very wide range of activities and duties, both customer facing and behind the scenes, and many of whom play an active role in the management of the railway.
