Although within the immediate vicinity of the City and Canary Wharf – the financial engines of the capital – and despite recent Olympic investment, the East End remains one of the most deprived areas in the country, characterised by: High levels of deprivation: Hackney and Tower Hamlets are ranked as the second and third most deprived boroughs in England. High Unemployment: Newham and Tower Hamlets continue to have the highest level of unemployment in London at 15% and 13% respectively. Child Poverty: The percentage of children living in poverty in Tower Hamlets (53%), Hackney (40%) and Newham (39%) is significantly above the national average of 28%. As a community foundation, EECF brings together local people, community organisations and businesses to work together to overcome these challenges.
