It was started by NICEM (Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities) who supported its development until it became an independent organisation in 2007. It provides advice, information, support, activities and educational opportunities, and a voice for refugees and asylum seekers in Northern Ireland. Over the 10 years of its development, NICRAS activities have included drop in and group social activities, educational opportunities, English classes, provision of advice and support, inter community work, good relations, volunteer development and lobbying for change. NICRAS is a membership based charity. The management committee is elected at the AGM and is composed of asylum seekers and refugees and advisors with expert knowledge of policy and charities. Membership has increased steadily and there are now almost 200 members.
