(US, UCAN - N/A) Browse eventsUCAN's vision is that youth who have suffered trauma can become our future leaders. Our mission is to build strong families through compassionate healing, education and empowerment. Founded 145 years ago as a Civil War orphanage, we are one of Chicago’s oldest, yet most innovative, social service agencies. UCAN serves 11,000 at-risk children, youth and families across Illinois through more than 30 programs. Our programs create a healing process for youth who have experienced trauma and provide a continuum of care including the following services: • Therapeutic Youth Home • K-12 Therapeutic Day School • Clinical and counseling services • Transitional and independent living programs • Support for pregnant and parenting teens • Foster care placement • Workforce development • Youth leadership development • Violence prevention programming In the summer of 2016, UCAN completed a $43 million capital campaign to construct our new Drost-Harding Campus located on Chicago’s west side. The space is home to more than 300 full- and part-time employees working at the John D. and Alexandra C. Nichols Program and Administrative Headquarters which enables our services to be more centralized in providing expanded outreach for youth leadership and violence prevention programming, clinical, counseling and family support services, and workforce development initiatives. In addition, the campaign made possible the Diermeier Therapeutic Youth Home, a state-of-the-art facility for youth who have suffered trauma to heal and grow.

Originally set up in 2004 to provide essential short break services for children and young people with learning and often physical disabilities, today we offer a wide range of additional care services, social, play and recreational opportunities (including an after school clubs and a popular Saturday club), outreach support and life skills training. Employing clinical and registered nurse specialists The Chiltern Centre is unique locally in being able to provide care for children and young people with profound and multiple and complex physical, emotional, behavioural and medical needs. These needs include sensory impairments, mobility, communication needs, complex feeding needs, breathing difficulties, severe learning difficulties and long-term health issues including cerebral palsy, downs syndrome and autism. 80% of the children require at least 1:1 care, some 2:1 and even 3:1. We support 85 families across the Thames Valley and South Oxfordshire - from a few hours after school once a week, weekly youth clubs or a half-day in the holidays to overnight care and even multi-day breaks.
