Special Olympics Gateshead (UK, 800329ZZZ) Browse events

YTD Raised: £30.00

Special Olympics Gateshead Sporting Club - a registered charity, which provides opportunities for people with learning disabilities in Gateshead to undertake weekly sports training and compete in regional, national and international competitions. Special Olympics Gateshead was accredited by the Great Britain Board in April 2014 and you may have seen footage of us on both Tyne Tees and BBC (Look North) local TV news on Friday 30th May 2014, when Lawrie McMenemy, (Special Olympics GB President) was in attendance. The Special Olympics programme is the 3rd strand of the Olympics, alongside the Olympics and Paralympics. Unlike the other two organisations, the Special Olympics programme continually struggles for fundraising and our ability to buy sports equipment, rent sporting venues or travel to local and national competitions is very much down to our own fundraising endeavours.

YTD Raised: £30.00

Providing support for men who have been sexually abused Mankind is the only agency in the South East dedicated to the wellbeing of men who have experienced sexual violation at any time in their lives. We define sexual violation as any non-consensual or unwanted act of sexualised violence, coercion, manipulation or abuse - this includes childhood sexual abuse, adult sexual assault and rape. We want to see a world where no one is silenced by sexual violence We focus on working with men because research estimates that 1-in-9 men have suffered childhood sexual abuse, and 1-in-29 men have experienced sexual violence as an adult.  This equates to nearly 4 million men across the UK. We work with men but care about everyone We see sexual abuse as a community issue and it is only by working together we can tackle the problems that allows sexual abuse to persist.  A contribution to Mankind will enable us to continue to provide therapeutic services to men and also develop community based resources that will empower us all to take action against abuse. Sibs (UK, 1145200) Browse events

YTD Raised: £30.00

Why we support siblings There are 2.3 million siblings in the UK growing up with/have grown up with a brother or sister who is disabled, or has a long-term illness or life limiting condition. Young siblings Children and young people growing up with a disabled brother or sister get less attention from parents and have more worries and responsibilities than their peers. They are more likely than their peers to experience public prejudice, family breakdown, bereavement and poverty. As a consequence, young siblings are vulnerable to isolation, bullying, reduced wellbeing and problems with progress at school.  Adult siblings Adult siblings, in particular those who have a brother or sister with a lifelong learning disability, provide support, advocacy and care for their brothers and sisters, at the same time as juggling support and care for their elderly parents, their own children, and their work. They rarely receive any acknowledgement of their role, information about service provision, or support for their own needs. They have also experienced a lifetime of their needs coming second to that of another person. As a consequence, adult siblings are vulnerable to isolation and are at risk for anxiety and depression, and have reduced opportunities for work and further education.  How we support siblings How your money will help in 2014 We have started a major project to make sure young siblings are supported in schools. We need to raise £30,000 to make this happen. So far we have raised £6,000 towards this and need to raise a further £24,000. We would love you to help us by making a donation or doing a fundraising event. Monica McCaffrey Chief Executive, Sibs
