(HKD, IRD91) Browse eventsToday millions of people are leaving their home countries out of fear of persecution, torture, and conflict. Several thousand are now living as refugees in Hong Kong. Most are not entitled to work, leaving them in deplorable conditions. This only exacerbates their trauma. Female refugees and asylum-seekers are particularly vulnerable and often subject to exploitation and abuse. Free to Run is serving 45 refugees in Hong Kong, with a special focus on women. By providing them with essential access to sports, they are overcoming the social isolation of living as refugees in Hong Kong, dealing with past traumas, and rebuilding their self-confidence. Refugees in Hong Kong are not allowed to work or even volunteer, so the fitness activities are some of the only opportunities they have to re-develop their mental and physical strength. Our hiking program with female refugees provides hiking activities every week for a group of 30 women. A mixed gender track training group of 30 refugees enjoys coached track training also on a weekly basis and enters local races in Hong Kong. Free to Run is also starting a continuing education and Mentorship program for refugees, allowing them to acquire new skills or maintain their professional skills, in the hope that in the future they can reintegrate the work force as soon as possible.
