St Thomas of Canterbury Church, Elsfield (UK, 267742929990) Browse events

YTD Raised: £3,360.00

The parish church of St Thomas of Canterbury has stood in the rural village of Elsfield for almost 850 years. The chancel arch, being the earliest surviving part of the present building, dates from 1170-80. Despite the passing of considerable time, the changes in rural life and the nature of a village on the outskirts of Oxford, St Thomas church remains central to the life and function of the community in Elsfield. Over the intervening centuries, the external walls of the church have withstood the various forces of nature. However, 900 years on, the stonework has started to deteriorate and needs to be repaired and restored in such a way that the church building can remain solid for another 900 years. We are planning a rolling programme of work over two years to restore the external walls and the window sills, surrounds and frames. The total cost of the work will be around £90,000. Through the generosity of various trusts and foundations, we have already secured £36,000. As part of our ongoing efforts to raise the remaining £54,000, a group of Elsfield villagers will embark on a sponsored walk along Hadrian’s wall. We will start in the east near Hexham on Friday 5th April and walk westwards, finishing in Carlisle on Monday 8th April having covered around 55 miles. We hope that you will be able to sponsor our endeavour. You might wish to support the cultural heritage aspects, the community value aspects, or just support us as friends. In whatever way you support us, your donations will be gratefully received. Thank you very much Fraser, James, Joel, Peter and Tim
