(UK, 1057777) On 2nd January 1993, Sean Devereux was shot dead - assassinated by a hired gunman whilst working for UNICEF in Kismayo, Somalia. This was a targeted killing. Sean died coming to the aid of children. In his memory, The Sean Devereux Children's Fund was set up to continue Sean's great work to help children thoughout Africa who are suffering because of war or poverty.

Blood cancers affect all ages, and ELF’s awards are targeted at all age groups. All our awards are made with the patient in mind and even the research and clinical trials we support are chosen to have a near future benefit for patients. To reinforce our patient centred approach, ELF makes a number of grants each year to support doctors, nurses and related health professionals in their work with blood cancer patients. We are particularly proud of the support we give to nurses, because it is the nurses who are most often in the frontline of patient care. We are also aware that advances in treatment and care come about by education and training. COSMIC raises money through a number of events each year, and is heavily supported by families whose lives have been touched by the PICU. All funds are used to provide life saving equipment, to provide support and accommodation to parents and to fund training, education and an internationally significant research programme at Imperial College London looking at the causes, effects and treatment of childhood diseases.

YTD Raised: £3,741.25Our precious baby girl, Aila Coull, lost her battle to Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (A.M.L.) aged 16 months following five months of grueling treatment. A.M.L. accounts for less than 20% of childhood leukaemias. It is more often found in adults, where the majority of research is carried out, but behaves very differently in children. There is only a 50% survival rate with this paediatric cancer which depends hugely on each individual patient's particular genetic complications. In setting up The Aila Coull Foundation, our main aim is to help fund research into newer, better treatments and ultimately a cure for this aggressive disease. The Foundation will also from time to time support other charitable purposes or organisations connected with childhood Acute Myeloid Leukaemia.
