Alongside You is a Christian Charity providing practical and emotional support for children and families living with HIV in East London. We recruit and train volunteers who offer support through home-based childcare and friendship. Volunteers are matched with a family and visit regularly for at least a year, and often for much longer. Over time they build supportive relationships with the children and parents they visit. The main emphasis is to get alongside, through the ups and the downs that life and living with HIV can bring, and to provide relief through fun time enjoying activities together, with rest time for parents! “Her visits are wonderful. We wait for Tuesdays. She goes out of her way to help, and is part of our family now.” Through the relationships built up by regular visits, we have been able to support children through; family bereavement, disclosure about HIV in the family, time in hospital and struggles with medication and appointments, role as young carers, isolation and anxiety due to stigma, overcoming barriers with education, child protection concerns, time in foster care, hardship caused by immigration status, poor temporary housing etc. “Thank you for being there for us, we can depend on you” We also run a group outings programme, children without regular workers are taken out for a day trip each school holiday. On average we are able to take 40-50 children each holiday to enjoy activities such as visiting a city farm, theatre, bowling, museum. In addition we provide a youth programme, for 12-18 year olds aware of HIV in the family. This provides a safe context for young people to meet others living with HIV, and to build supportive peer relationships. We currently work with 60 families, through a team of 60 volunteers, across the 7 East London Boroughs. We always have a waiting list for our service, with new referrals received from hospitals, social workers, HIV organisations and families themselves.
