Sunshine Foundation Romania is a charitable organization, registered in Northern Ireland (registered charity number XR56342) and enjoys the full support of the Romanian Child Protection Agency. SFR aims to significantly improve the lives and living conditions of children who have been abandoned by their birth families in oppressive and poorly managed orphanages. Through the help of a small number of volunteers in N. Ireland and Romania, SFR has built 3 homes for just over 30 children who previously lived in overcrowded buildings, were rarely allowed to go outside and never had any visitors. These children were denied any form of formal education due to their abandoned status, and were looked after by a limited number of unskilled and untrained staff. Through the work of the volunteers and the support of our sponsors, SFR has really made a difference to these children's lives.

Most of us are used to taking control of our own lives – deciding how we want to live. For people with learning disabilities, this isn’t always the case. At Yarrow, it is. Now in our 24th year, we constantly push boundaries of conventional support so that people - including those with profound disabilities like Lydia - remain independent. Lydia doesn’t use speech. But she has always enjoyed looking at photographs. So Yarrow has gathered together her favourites and put them on a computer, along with pictures that Lydia has taken herself with a digital camera. Next up, Lydia was introduced to a big red switch to use as a mouse to help her click through her pictures. It took Lydia just three sessions with Yarrow’s support for her to make the connection that pressing the big red switch made the pictures change. Lydia’s photos are organised into categories - activities she enjoys, holidays, day trips, favourite cafes and shopping, so she can choose what she looks at. She now uses the photos to tell us what she wants to do and to live the life she wants to lead. You can see Lydia using the big red switch in the photo gallery.
