It was started by NICEM (Northern Ireland Council for Ethnic Minorities) who supported its development until it became an independent organisation in 2007. It provides advice, information, support, activities and educational opportunities, and a voice for refugees and asylum seekers in Northern Ireland. Over the 10 years of its development, NICRAS activities have included drop in and group social activities, educational opportunities, English classes, provision of advice and support, inter community work, good relations, volunteer development and lobbying for change. NICRAS is a membership based charity. The management committee is elected at the AGM and is composed of asylum seekers and refugees and advisors with expert knowledge of policy and charities. Membership has increased steadily and there are now almost 200 members.

YTD Raised: £143.00The Eating Stones Fund UK was established in April 2007 by an international development student from Leeds University, after spending time working with a social development group and HIV/AIDs clinic in an area of slum dwelling on the edge of the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. The people in Kenyas slums are affected by poverty and sickness every day of their lives. As a result adults are unable to work, children become malnourished and many are orphaned. They desperately need help. Currently operating an orphanage which is home to 48 of Kenyas most vulnerable young people along with a primary school, clinic and with several community projects in the pipe line Eating Stones has become well known as a project that is succeeding in its mission to relieve poverty and provide the opportunity of a better life for those who would otherwise be without. At Eating Stones we feel that country, city, town, community and individual specific programmes are key in relieving poverty which is why all of our work in Kenya is tailored to the particular needs of all involved. As a relatively small charity we greatly rely on the hard work of those who put on events or collect money through sponsorship. We are currently working with CareCorner Orphanage (CCO) in Chiangmai, Thailand and Crisis Relief Singapore to bring humanitarian aid to the Karen refugee settlements and refugee camps around the northern Thailand near the boarders of Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia. More recently we have also entered Myanmar and provided mobile clinics and ministering to orphanages. Our past projects includes building a children's home, building water wells and piping for rural villages, providing water filter systems, building a fish farm to generate jobs and income for the orphanage and operating mobile clinics. We have also been working closely with Carecorner Orphanage in Chiangmai Thailand. Carecorner houses abandoned children, including children suffering from Aids and those rescued from child prostitution. It is committed to giving these children a caring environment. We periodically send teams from the UK to be involve as well as oversee the projects. Your donations will go 100% to these projects and will directly help and impact these precious lives.
