Tower Hamlets Foodbank (UK, 1137819) Browse events

YTD Raised: £7,915.55

Tower Hamlets Foodbank works to combat hidden hunger within the local community. Tower Hamlets foodbank opened in December 2010 with the aim to provide emergency food to individuals and families facing crisis in Tower Hamlets. Since then we have fed over 6,000 people - 2,700 of whom have been children. Despite being home to Canary Wharf, Tower Hamlets has the highest level of child poverty in the UK – 25% of all households in the borough survive on less that £15,000 a year. Whether it’s due to a financial emergency, benefit change, mental illness or debt, many in Tower Hamlets are one unexpected bill away from having to visit a foodbank. All foodbank clients are referred through our network of care–professional agencies across the borough who are best placed to identify clients in need of emergency food. Our network of care-professionals includes GP’s, Social Workers, Health Visitors and Children’s Centers.  Food is distributed at a foodbank centre where clients receive light refreshments, a listening ear, and emotional support/advice, whilst being signposted on to where they can get help to tackle the crisis they find themselves in. They also receive their much-needed donation of food, enough to last three days - which is the period assessed as the time it takes for the appropriate agencies to be in a position to assist. We are also working in partnership with the Child Poverty Action Group to provide welfare advice in our foodbank sessions to tackle the underlying cause of the crisis. So not only does your donation help to provide food but it also helps to tackle the underlying cause of food poverty. All food distributed is donated by the local community via supermarket collections, individuals, schools, businesses, community groups as well as churches, which is then ‘banked’ in a warehouse. Tower Hamlets Foodbank is a community project and so greatly relies on the generosity of the public – we would greatly appreciate your support so as to continue to provide this much needed service. Tower Hamlets Foodbank is coordinated by the charity First Love Foundation. For further information, please email us at [email protected].
