(UK, 1152146) Here at e:merge we engage with young people who are surround by deep and extensive poverty. We see extrodinary demonstrations of impoverished young people who come to us from homes limited by their situations and we are priviledged to see them grow, develop and achieve through support and encourgaement regardless of their situation. The BD4 area of Bradford, where we do the majority of our work, has a large amount of deprivation and many of our young people face considerable challenges for their lives. This is inclusive of but not exlusively aspects such as limited education, prospecst of prison and the challneges of coming from broken homes with very little support. Many of the young people we engage with show signs of low self asteem and therefore demonstrate a considerable lack of motivation to achieve and therefore often find themselves trapped in a cycle of poverty that they see as normality.

The purpose of the organisation is to help disadvantaged and vulnerable young people realise that they already possess the inner greatness and confidence to transform their own lives and those around them. The core of our work is with young people from tough realities, who have already experienced significant challenges in their lives, such as being in care, leaving care, poverty, homelessness, addiction or exclusion. We provide our programme participants with a safe space in which they can discover their own values and how these can help them make more positive personal career and life choices. Utilising our inspirational custom built leadership centres in Staffin on the Isle of Skye and at Ardoch on the banks of Loch Lomond our programmes have been described by our young graduates as an “inward bound” experience offering them an opportunity to reflect on themselves and learn from others. For the more than 5,000 young people and adults who have participated in our programmes since 2000, Columba 1400 has provided a turning point in their lives. Our values of Awareness, Focus, Creativity, Integrity, Perseverance and Service which underpin all our programmes provided a framework within which the young people can embark on their own journey of personal transformation and leadership development.

It promotes the development of young people in a way they find enjoyable to achieve their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potentials, as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their communities. We strive to ensure that no young person or adult is disadvantaged by reason of mental or physical disability, ethnic origin, gender, sexual orientation, religious or political belief, or financial situation. Child protection is paramount in all policies and activities. A code of good practice is operated to safeguard the welfare of all members by protecting them from physical, sexual and emotional harm. Young members actively help within the local community on a regular basis to forge good relationships with neighbours, the church and local organisations. The involvement of parents is encouraged at all times. The lasting impression of all members of 3rd Ashton, both past and present should be "Fun and Friends". We hold weekly meetings at the scout hut for all sections (boys and girls in beavers 6-8, cubs 8-10, scouts 10-14, young leaders 14-18 and girls in brownies 8-10 yrs) In addition we run camps for all sections each year, and a family camp. The programmes provided by the leaders and helpers are enjoyable and aimed at giving the youngsters respect for themselves and others, responsibility and confidence.
