Rathbone is a UK wide voluntary youth sector organisation providing opportunities for young people to transform their life-circumstances by re-engaging with learning, discovering their ability to succeed and achieving progression to further education, training or employment. We are one of the largest independent providers of education and training in the tertiary sector. Our philosophy and our approach to working with young people today comes directly from our founder Elfrida Rathbone who believed that everyone, whatever their starting point in life, can make progress through learning. The focus of our work is on young people facing great personal challenges in terms of their learning and social support needs. Rathbone provision reaches some 20,000 young people annually across Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Our work is focused on four key programme areas: Youth Choices , a programme for young people aged 14 to16 who are either wholly or partially excluded from school Preparation for Life and Work, a programme called Foundation Learning in England, Skill Build in Wales and Get Ready for Work in Scotland, for young people aged 16 to 19 who are not yet ready for work or further study; Apprenticeships, for young people aged 16 to 24 who are ready to embark on training for work; Youth Engagement, outreach programmes for young people aged 14 to19 who are not in education, training or employment. GET aims to inspire people from all backgrounds to get into the outdoors, to test themselves in different environments, and to push their limits. We want to help people develop their character through exposure to challenging, exciting and inspiring experiences. The Trust offers small to medium size grants to individuals who need financial support in order to achieve this aim. As young people are put under ever greater academic pressure and face growing social and psychological pressures through the emergence of social media and gaming mediums it has been the traditional reliefs that have been thrust aside. At times when it may be most needed, adventurous training seems to be dropping further and further down the list of priorities. We want to inspire people to take that next step, to try something new or challenging, and enhance their own expectations of what they can achieve.

YOPEY (pronounced yop-pea) runs campaigns to combat the bad press inflicted on young people by revealing, recognising and rewarding young unsung heroes and setting them up as positive role models for other young people to copy. We are creating tomorrow’s great citizens today. In our first 10 years (2005-2014) we held campaigns in 12 English counties – Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire, Suffolk and North, South and West Yorkshire plus the whole of Scotland, In 2014 we held our first YOPEY in Greater London. Our ultimate aim is to hold campaigns across the whole of the UK. At the end of each campaign we hold an awards ceremonies at which the very best young citizens are giving cash awards to invest in their community projects. They received YOPEYs – ‘Oscars’ for young people who give to others. In our first 10 years we awarded young people about £150,000. We are also trialing befriending schemes where we are linking schools with care homes. The young volunteers are given training to relate to elderly people with dementia. YOPEY has mainly been supported by companies as part of their corporate social responsibility, but this VirginMoneyGiving page has been set up to enable the contestants in Miss Norwich and Miss Ipswich, and Mr Norwich and Mr Ipswich, to fundraise for YOPEY as part of their bids to represent their county town in the annual Miss England contest.. But anyone is welcome to fundraise for YOPEY using VirginMoneyGiving as a way to authenticate what you are doing and ensure your sponsors’ money reaches this charity, without any commission being taken by VirginMoneyGiving.
Our Scout Group is based in the village of Goudhurst in the Weald of Kent and has been providing Scouting to young people for over 100 years. In recent years the number of children wanting to join the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts has increased considerably and we have waiting lists in all sections. Our present building is a former school gymnasium of wooden construction with a steeply pitched roof and is over 100 years old. There is only one meeting room with poor acoustics. This makes it very difficult for the Leaders to provide the range of activities they would like to, especially in the winter months when the outdoor facilities cannot be used. The main benefits of the extension will be: 1) to provide an additional, smaller meeting room so the Leaders can work with small groups and run different activities simultaneously; 2) to provide a larger kitchen with room for cooking activities. The existing kitchen will be converted to much needed extra storage; 3) to allow us to free up our waiting lists and to be better placed to cope with the continuing demand by local families for their youngsters to join our Group.
New Horizon is a day centre based in Kings Cross, supporting homeless and vulnerable young people aged 16 to 21. Founded in 1967, New Horizon has always been motivated by concern for the number of young homeless people coming to the Kings Cross area and getting drawn into a damaging lifestyle. In particular, young people who are involved with the drugs and the sex industry are seen as targets for New Horizon's intervention. Typically they are suffering from emotional and mental and/or physical health problems and are at risk of offending. New Horizon takes a holistic approach in responding to the needs, interests and aspirations of each young person and its main aim is to provide a positive future for this disadvantaged group.

We are a small charity working in Dhaka city, Bangladesh, amongst the poorest people of the slums and busties, bringing hope into desperate lives. Asha began by providing basic literacy training to street girls, offering them a first step on the ladder of self-respect and hope. Over the years more than 300 illiterate teenagers have received basic education that they would otherwise have been denied. Many of these girls have now gone on to receive work-training and experience in one of our Next Steps Asha training centres. Here they learn practical skills and produce a variety of craft goods and hand-embroidered fashion accessories. We are completely dependent on the kind donations of our supporters and funds raised through the sale of Next Steps Asha products. All the money we receive goes directly towards the cost of maintaining the education centres, paying wages to girls and local staff and to the provision of medical help and support in cases of need. Please visit the Meider Jonno Asha website for more information, up to date news on our projects, and stories of lives that have been changed.
