Blantyre Soccer Academy as a whole has, since its inception in 2010, been organised and run solely by volunteer coaches and administrative staff and exists as a non-profit making venture. As a self-funded organisation of volunteers we of course rely very much so on the goodwill of the local community we seek to serve. As such we source sponsorship from local sympathetic businesses and other individuals who share the mission aims of our project. Like all such organisations which exist and thrive and are dependent on the goodwill of the local community, we are always seeking to source alternative mechanisms for funding so as to ensure our organisation continues to thrive and play a vital role in our local community in terms of social cohesion and integration.

We are a charity with a focus on children, and we provide healthy recreational activity for the community and help our 6-18 year olds through their growing years with life skills and experiences which will prepare them better for adulthood. We have even changed our charitable constitution to allow us to have 16 year olds as trustees to give them experience. And we operate a Youth Council of 11 - 18 year olds who act as a young players union as well as producing the clubs newsletter. The 1066 Specials were formed in 2003 to provide football opportunities to young people with special needs. Over that period, approximately 250 young people have enjoyed the 1066 Specials experience, and today there are approximately a hundred registered players at the club, which makes the Specials the largest independent community ‘Special Needs’ football club in Sussex. The 1066 Specials is an FA Chartered Club which is a kite mark that the Football Association awards to Clubs that are well run and sustainable, which place child protection, quality coaching and safety paramount. In 2013 the 1066 Specials were awarded the prestigious honour of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, equivalent to the MBE for voluntary organisations. This most inspiring and aspiring of football clubs have four adult and two junior sides playing in the Sussex Disability League.
