Fine & Country Foundation (UK, 1160989) Browse events

YTD Raised: £1,711.00

The Fine & Country Foundation has been created to help combat one of the largest social issues in the UK – homelessness. Last year, the Government estimated around 2,414 people sleep on the street on any one night across England, a rise of 36% over three years. Often the reasons for homelessness are misunderstood, with many blaming the individuals for poor life decisions and carelessness. The reality is: people become homeless for a whole range of complex and overlapping reasons that cannot be avoided, such as family breakdowns, mental or physical health problems or debts. Solving homelessness does not only involve putting a roof over people’s heads, it is also trying to tackle the root of the problem and asking the question: why did they became homeless in the first place? The Fine & Country Foundation is dedicated to bringing together all Fine & Country agents in over 275 locations worldwide to raise awareness of the causes of homelessness whilst supporting homeless charities.

Nightwatch (UK, 274925) Browse events

YTD Raised: £1,570.90

Nightwatch is a charity that has been caring for homeless people in the London Borough of Croydon for more than thirty years. We are an entirely voluntary organisation with more than 100 volunteers who are out, in teams, every night of the year. We help people at evey level of homelessness, including the street homeless through those in hostels, bed and breakfast and unsatisfactory accommodation. We also help former homeless poeple who are still vulnerable and whose main point of contact is via the homeless community. An important part of our work is not only the physical but the emoitional and spiritual wellbeing of the people we see. We are involved in supplying food, clothing, household goods and in the resettlement of former homeless people into new accommodation. We have no paid staff and the charity does not own property (a church allows us a kitchen and storage areas at a low rent). Our adminsitrative costs are therefore very low so a high proportion of money donated to us goes directly to people in need.

Jersken Little Angels Home (UK, 421) Browse events

YTD Raised: £1,540.00

Our aim is to help orphaned children by providing a home, family, care and education. We are based in both Jersey and Kenya, with our first recently built home just beyond the outskirts of Nairobi. We believe education is the key to self-sufficiency. That is why we place such a strong emphasis on educating the children. Without such emphasis, any assistance would simply be a band aid solution and not fix the long-term problems affecting these areas. We help our children reach new heights by inspiring them to develop the desire and capacity to break the cycle of poverty and to become the best that they can be. It is our goal to develop future leaders among these children so that one day they can help make their country self-sufficient. We must obtain on-going funding for the maintenance of the children and future paid staff. We started with just three children and volunteer helpers. Please help us help more.

Aokrucksackappeal (UK, 1160281) Browse events

YTD Raised: £1,513.47

AOK Rucksack Appeal is a charity founded in early in 2015 by Sally Harvey and recognised by the Charity Commission on 2nd February.  Sally worked with the homeless for over 10 years but had to take early retirement because she had Parkinson’s disease.  Her passions for the homeless lead her and her Trustees to form the charity.  Between them they have a wealth of experience.  Sally’s lies with drug and gambling addictions and mental health; Roger has decades of financial experience;  and Juliette has a degree in Psychology and other 25 years experience with addictions, mental health and domestic violence. This expertise does not stop there because there is an abundance of experience within the Advisory team.  This includes a psychiatric nurse, two addiction counsellors, a solicitor on housing law, a people developer, a journalist with experience of prisoners, a nurse, and alternative therapists.  In addition we have a very worthy patron, Stephen Young, Lord of Westbury. We are a unique charity in that we work with the major homeless agencies in getting homeless people OFF the streets, into accommodation, and back into the community using a philosophy based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The objective of the Charity is the relief of the needs of homeless people by the provision of funds, assistance, facilities, goods, services and other means of support in the Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and surrounding areas. To meet our objective we have the following aims: 1. To provide practical help and hope to new homeless persons by providing, via Agencies, rucksacks filled with essential items such as clothes, toiletries, and other useful items.  2. To provide practical help and hope to newly housed ex homeless persons by providing, via Agencies, baskets, bowls, and buckets filled with essential items such as healthy food, new clothes, toiletries and household items. 3. To work with and through the Agencies to empower and re-establish confidence and self worth to existing or ex rough sleepers through voluntary work, creative arts and life skills. 4. To integrate communities with the homeless and reduce the stigma of homelessness, and to create caring communities to assist with our mission of helping the homeless by bringing together people of all ages, abilities, beliefs, nationalities, and walks of life. The agencies that we help and the demands on our offerings continue to grow. We also provide, or have provided, the following services: * Clothing that is donated to us but unsuitable for our Rucksack and “Move In” pack offering, such as coats and trousers, but which is suitable for homeless people are passed to the Agencies.  * Sleeping Bags that are donated to us are passed onto the Agencies. * We work with the Red Tent organisation in providing feminine products for Homeless Agencies and Women’s Refuges.  They collect and we deliver. * Other items that are donated to us that we or the homeless cannot use, such as books, children’s clothing and toys, we pass onto charity shops and charity organisations.  We have made reciprocal arrangements so if they receive goods that are not appropriate for them, but are for us, they will pass them on. * We can produce advice ant training to build confidence, interview techniques and CV writing.  * We can lend out suits, shirts, ties and shoes if required for interviews.  * We have produced a poetry book on homelessness containing poems written by the homeless and ex-homeless.  This book has been commended by Bournemouth’s Poet Laureate, featured on his website, and with his assistance details of the book are displayed in all of the area’s libraries.  It inspired him to write his own “homeless” poem. * We have arranged an Art exhibition for homeless artists. * We have arranged for a hairdresser to provide hair cutting, currently on a monthly basis or ad hoc basis for interviews. * We can give talks to organisation in an attempt to reduce stigma. * We have donated children’s books to libraries to raise awareness amongst children. * We have provided 20 Sleeping Bags to CRI (Outreach Team) for homeless people brought inside out of the cold during the early hours of the morning.  * We have purchased and donated kitchen equipment to the YMCA to help them set up a Training Kitchen, so their people can learn basic cooking skills to help themselves, and possibly a start to a career in Catering.  To help with the empowerment we are encouraging those soup kitchens that are held indoors to have the homeless involved in the preparation, serving, and clearing up.  * We have just started a Suspended Coffee scheme.  A customer in one of the participating cafes can pay for an additional cup of coffee and these credits will be passed on by us to the local agencies for use by their clients.  This will enable them to socialise and make new friends.  * We have just started giving “Move On” packs to those moving from hostels to independent living.  Items include saucepans, pillows, duvets and covers and anything else that we may have in “stock”.  We always try to meet special requests. * We recently asked for, and received, a donation of 250 Christmas Gift Sets from Lush which we passed onto the three main agencies as Christmas presents for their clients.  What we did not asked for, but received, were numerous packs of Lush products.  These have been passed on to other homeless organisations and charities.  * We have arranged for an Artist to provide art lessons and art therapy to interested clients of the agencies. We would like to organise a regular meeting place where the ex-homeless can meet and make new friends rather than mix with the old ones that are still on the streets. We would like to open a shop or have a room somewhere, opening say once a week or fortnight, which would hold a large range of donated clothes, where homeless people could be referred by the agencies, to choose the clothes they require, hopefully in the right sizes.  Other empowerment events are planned and we are constantly looking for ways to improve our offerings and thus provide further and better help to the agencies and the homeless. Although we get a good and positive response from the Agencies when we make deliveries, now that we have reached our first anniversary of achieving Charity status we are asking both Agencies and Clients to complete a simple questionnaire on our responses to their needs.  Once we have their feedback we can use it towards reviewing and improving our service.

Atherton & Leigh Shelter for HoPe (UK, 1169858) Browse events

YTD Raised: £1,490.00

Atherton & Leigh Shelter for HoPe is a homeless shelter that aims to provide emergency night time accommodation and a hot meal to people who have nowhere else to sleep. Your donation will help us achieve this so thankyou. We were set up to give homeless people a safe and warm place to sleep during those cold winter months. Starting in Jan 2015 with a pilot,2 nights per week for 8 weeks it was clear that this was a service that is needed and that gave us the encouragement to do it all again in 2016. We opened at the start of Jan but this time for 4 nights per week and for 16 weeks during which time our amazing volunteers looked after 83 different guests, providing them with a hot meal, hot drinks, conversation and of course over 400 good night`s sleep, for people who may well have ended up on the streets in freezing conditions, plus a breakfast to see them on their way. In 2017 we hope to open for 5 nights to start with and will be looking to go full time in the very near future and for that we need to try and raise some funds in order that we can get the right building, set it up so we can provide a safe, warm environment for guests plus feed what we fear will be even more people than ever before.
