For example, The Nomntu Project pays for education fees and materials for women and girls who would otherwise have no access to education. This means they have a better chance of employment. Recently, The Nomntu Project funded a shelter for orphans and provided money for the shelter to develop its own vegetable gardens. The Nomntu project is also helping the women who run the shelter to expand their chicken selling business.   The Nomntu Project also supports a rural couple and their family who provide practical health support, both physical and mental, to the surrounding impoverished community. YTD Raised: £1,250.00

The Citizens Advice service provides free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone on their rights and responsibilities. It values diversity, promotes equality and challenges discrimination. The service aims to provide the advice people need for the problems they face, and to improve the policies and practices that affect people’s lives. The first Croydon CAB opened in September 1939, and we have been providing advice, information and help to clients ever since.  We are an independent charity, relying on funding from grants and donations. In the year 2013 we saw 7,259 clients and dealt with 12,489 issues.   Generally clients came to us with more than one issue (showing that we are a trusted provider of advice on many subject areas).  All areas of advice are covered to a general level with dominant enquiry areas including debt, welfare benefits, housing and employment. We have two main bureaux, in New Addington and South Norwood and run the advice service from both bureaux. We also have a help desk in the foyer of the new Croydon Council offices. As well as general advice, we offer in-depth casework to those living with cancer (thanks to Macmillan funding) and we also run financial capability classes which have provided over 300 Croydon residents with information on how to draw up a household budget, manage money and choose cheap utility packages.  The aim of these sessions is to give people the knowledge they need to avoid debt becoming a factor in their lives. We are raising funds in order to continue to provide advice and improve access to our services for people who live and/or work in Croydon. Rachel Dickenson, one of our Trustees is running the Huntingdon 10k run on Sunday 15th June to raise money for Croydon CAB.  Please sponsor her - the link to her fundraising page is:  http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/RachelD

Deptford Reach (UK, 1086143) Browse events

YTD Raised: £1,142.50

Join us to make Deptford Reach’s Homes for the Homeless Project a reality.       Deptford Reach has been granted planning permission to develop the current site in Deptford, South East London to create a self-sustainable building including 21 units for accommodation. These 1 bedroom flats will provide much needed accommodation as we support and prepare our clients to move on, whilst helping to reduce rough sleeping within the borough.   The project has been estimated to cost £3m and there is no better time to start fundraising than now!     Pictures of Future Plans for Deptford Reach     A message from the Trustees of Deptford Reach Deptford Reach is not a wealthy charity. At the beginning of each year we face the prospect of having to raise around £250,000 just to keep our doors open and services running. A small portion comes from statutory sources but the vast majority is raised from charitable trusts and foundations and from individual donations. The need to find this sort of money year in year out puts great strain on the organisation and in the longer term it is not sustainable. However we have one significant advantage over other charities in similar positions in that we own our own building and our own land.   The Trustees of Deptford Reach have been considering the development of our site for some years. Our building is old and in need of considerable modernisation. It is also too small and restrictive. As a consequence we are now ready to proceed with an exciting project not only to give Deptford Reach long term financial stability but also to provide vital affordable housing and a stepping stone to help homeless people improve their lives. Our plans will give us a brand new day centre to continue providing our core services but also, on 3 upper floors, 22 one bedroom flats. 21 of these will be homes for homeless people and one for our new caretaker.   The Deptford Reach Homes for the Homeless Project will take genuinely homeless people off Lewisham’s streets or out of their squats and provide them with safe, secure, affordable accommodation at Deptford Reach. Our aim is to limit any individual’s stay to around 6 months but during this vital period they can stabilise their lives, access our services and receive our help to move on into education, work and ultimately their own accommodation in the private rented sector.   At the same time Deptford Reach will receive the rental income from 21 flats and this will provide vital income towards our annual running costs. We estimate that the rebuilding project will take 18 months to complete and cost £3m. Plans are already underway to raise the capital needed from a number of different sources and during the building of the new centre we will relocate to another local site and ensure that most of our vital services can continue uninterrupted. We urge you to support our Homes for the Homeless Project. It will undoubtedly help improve the lives of thousands of people in the coming years, it will give Deptford Reach financial security and it will address some of the most critical social issues facing Britain today.   The Trustees of Deptford Reach       About Deptford Reach Deptford Reach is a drop-in centre for adults over 16 years of age. We help people rebuild lives that have been affected by homelessness, mental illness, drug or alcohol abuse and social exclusion. From our centre in London SE8, we offer a wide range of support, advice, training and practical help. We believe in respect and individual support. Deptford in South East London is one of the most deprived districts anywhere in the UK with very high levels of social exclusion.    Video 1 (Clients and volunteers of Deptford Reach) Video 2 (BBC Inside Out documentary 2013)
