Shannon Trust Trustee For most of us reading is a skill we take for granted. For thousands of people in prison, however, reading a letter from home, a job application or a newspaper is simply beyond them. 46% of prisoners have a literacy level at or below that expected at 11 years old. Prisoners teaching prisoners to read makes sense.The one-to-one peer mentored approach of the Shannon Trust Reading Plan appeals to prisoners who are reluctant to engage in classroom learning because: The Reading Plan runs in almost all prisons in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Prisoners and prison staff are supported by Shannon Trust volunteers who work together to make the Reading Plan available to non-reading prisoners. In 2014, 4,400 prisoners decided to learn to read with the Reading Plan. How your donation could help. Your donation will help to make our vision, 'every prisoner a reader', a reality. In 2015 we launched our new Reading Programme, Turning Pages. Written specifically for adults in custody, Turning Pages is made up of 5 manuals and 30 readers (emergent reading books). We provide these together with trained volunteers, Mentor training and publicity material free of charge to prisons. Thank you.

The children we support are all destitute; some are orphans and others are runaways escaping a lifetime of neglect and/or abuse. Big Hug aims to relieve these children of hardship and break the cycle of poverty by providing them with clean, safe shelter, a real education and above all, a family...what every child deserves. At our partner project, Cornerstone Children’s Home (based in south India) we currently support 33 children and young people. The goal of the home is not to be an institution but to provide a loving, safe and comfortable family atmosphere for the children. It only costs £5 to provide a child with shelter and education for an entire month. That’s as little as 17p a day to change a child’s life. Big Hug Foundation's mission: The well-being and development of the children we work with will always be at the forefront of everything we do. Domestic violence not only relates to physical and mental abuse, it can also take the form of elderly abuse, trafficking, rape, stalking, FGM, parental abuse, child abuse, forced marriage, and honour based violence. The main objectives of the charity are as outlined below: To provide a safe house which is welcoming and private. Safety accommodation has full police and fire brigade system. To provide support to help with practical issues. Provide food and other essentials women and children We risk assess every client and make referrals to various organisations. Provide an alternative option to refuges which is first of its kind in the UK. Provide a higher level of safety for these women and children. To offer permanent accommodation where appropriate with continued support or refer to support housing depending on the clients needs. The charity is a non-profit making. The purpose of fundraising is to cover the costs of the service and various support. The cost to run the service is just over £15,000 a year.
