YTD Raised: £10,690.59The Brittle Bone Society is the only UK charity supporting people who have Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI). Someone with OI can experience hundreds of fractures in their lifetime. We work closely with the main NHS centres of excellence located in Sheffield, Birmingham, London, Manchester, Bristol and Glasgow who continue to make medical breakthroughs and advances in the various orthopaedic surgical procedures that OI patients require. Part of our work is to fundraise for specialised wheelchairs, to give people their right to improved mobility and more independence. We also work to raise awareness about issues of isolation and support vital research programmes into better treatments and diagnosis of this rare condition. A key pillar of our work is to provide much needed support when a person is diagnosed, or when they learn their new baby has the condition The feedback we receive from both members and medical professionals is that the service provided by the Brittle Bone Society is highly valued and indeed critical in improving the day to day lives of people with OI. Although we are based in Taunton, we cover the whole of Somerset. We support visually impaired people of all ages, helping them continue to lead a full and independent life. At our centre in Taunton we have a Resource and Rehabilitation Centre where we provide a wide range of equipment for visually impaired people and specialist advice. We also have a Mobile Resource Unit which visits towns and villages across the county ensuring more people in this rural area can access our services. Many visually impaired people feel intensely lonely and isolated. Loss of independence and social exclusion often follow a diagnosis of sight loss. To counteract these problems, Somerset Sight provides volunteer visitors and arranges social afternoons to enable visually impaired people to get out and about in their communities and meet other people. If you or someone you know has a visual impairment or if you are a carer for a visually impaired person, the people at Somerset Sight are able to provide help and practical advice.

Survivors are often left with cognitive and physical difficulties that may include difficulties with walking, speech and language and vision in addition to short and long term memory impairment, the skills to recognise family and friends, to plan daily activities and motivation. Survivors need support from Headway to readjust to their change in their lives and to find strategies to continue an active and meaningful life. All donations made for this event will be used to provide social rehabilitation activities that will enhance survivors and facilities well being and promote recovery.
