We are an unincorporated association charity set up in the loving memory of Maria Mcsloy. Maria was rushed into hospital at the end of February 2010 suffering from severe abdominal pain and it was soon discovered that she had a melon sized tumour growing inside her. Over the next few days infections had set in and she was losing weight at a dramatic rate, it seemed that whatever the doctors tried nothing could bring these infections under control and it seemed that there was little hope she would survive. After several attempts with different antibiotics her temperature dropped which enabled the surgical team to perform the operation she needed to save her life, the consultant surgeon and his team gave up their own time to be at the hospital and perform the six-seven hour operation. During this time they removed a large tumour, gave her a full hysterectomy, took part of her colon away and scraped her stomach & bladder clean. Because of this wonderful dedication they certainly did save Maria’s life and therefore started her road to recovery. All of this happened about one month before “Hollie Footer” (Maria’s Eldest Daughter) was due to get married over in Cyprus and Maria unfortunately had to inform her daughter that she was not able to join her on the biggest day of her life. With all the upset that the last few weeks had brought Maria set about Plan B which was to send her best friend in her place to keep an eye on all the children and keep their spirits held high. When the hospital informed Maria that she was unable to go she made sure that she was going to be able to view the big day via Skype and wish them all well, so everyone was as happy as they could be. 2 Weeks prior to the actual wedding day Maria had her first consultation at the chemotherapy unit. She began to inform the consultant about the unfortunate news of missing her eldest daughters wedding. The consultant told Maria that if she wanted to go she could, as long as she had an injection every day to prevent her blood from clotting. With Maria being the fighter she was, she and Husband Peter set about booking flights for them to attend the wedding. Maria and Peter managed to keep all of this secret and surprised Hollie on the morning of her wedding by knocking on her hotel room door, little did Hollie know they had been in the same hotel since the day before and had been watching the family from their room. “What a wonderful day and what a lift for Maria”. What Maria put herself through and what Maria endured to make this journey and carry it through to the end shows what an inspirational, determined, brave beautiful lady she was. Maria will always be remembered for being the lady who was beautiful inside and out with the most lovely eyes, infectious laugh and smile, who only saw the good in all things. God bless you Sweetheart, you was the most beautiful Wife, Mum and Grandmother. She truly was and still is an inspirational woman who will never be forgotten. Now it comes to us all to raise as much as we can in her memory and give back the love and generosity she gave us all.

In July 2010 we sent a team of experienced UK surgeon volunteers to Ho, Ghana to perform sight saving cataract surgery. This year, July 2011, we will again send another team to Ghana. We are raising £14,000 pounds for this trip. Please support our cause. The estimated population of Ghana is 23 million. Over 267,000 Ghanaians suffer from total blindness, and more than 7.4 million are afflicted with sight threatening diseases. Cataract and refractive errors accounts for at least 50% of treatable blindness. We aim to deliver free specialist eye care to all those who are in dire need, and concurrently, we hope to train local doctors, nurses and healthcare volunteers to manage and educate patients in the future.
