The Brittle Bone Society is the only UK charity supporting people who have Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI). Someone with OI can experience hundreds of fractures in their lifetime. We work closely with the main NHS centres of excellence located in Sheffield, Birmingham, London, Manchester, Bristol and Glasgow who continue to make medical breakthroughs and advances in the various orthopaedic surgical procedures that OI patients require. Part of our work is to fundraise for specialised wheelchairs, to give people their right to improved mobility and more independence. We also work to raise awareness about issues of isolation and support vital research programmes into better treatments and diagnosis of this rare condition. A key pillar of our work is to provide much needed support when a person is diagnosed, or when they learn their new baby has the condition The feedback we receive from both members and medical professionals is that the service provided by the Brittle Bone Society is highly valued and indeed critical in improving the day to day lives of people with OI. Precious Sight Foundation (PSF) was founded in July 2014, by Ade and Biyi Adewumi as a result of a traumatic experience they went through where Biyi lost her sight for a period of almost 6 months.Living in the United Kingdom, Biyi received free prompt and adequate eyecare as her condition was rare enough to attract interest from the medics at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. At the end of the experience was a successful Corneal transplant and Biyi can see again.Ade and Biyi are now on a mission to help others in the 3rd world not loose sight needlessly as research suggest that approximately 56 per cent of people lose their sight unnecessarily.At the end of this experience Biyi wrote her first book "Further than I could see'' and PSF was launched. Operating from 4 Sight Advice Centres based in Penwortham, Chorley, Morecambe and Southport the Society strives to reach out and provide an accessible local service. We pride ourselves on being big enough to cope but small enough to care. Galloway’s need to raise £850,000 each year to continue running its services, this is something we simply could not do without the support of the general public who so kindly volunteer, donate and leave legacies.
