The Katie Haines Memorial Trust (UK, 1140558) Browse events

YTD Raised: £741.80

THE KATIE HAINES MEMORIAL TRUST (KHMT) exists because of a tragic accident. Our work is inspired by the life of the person we lost, Katie (aged 31). Our mission is to raise awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) and prevent unnecessary loss of life. CO is known as 'the silent killer' because you can't see it, hear it, smell it or taste it. CO symptoms are similar to flue, food poisonin or even a hangover - headache, stomach pain, nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath. KHMT is run by a committed group of individuals but rely on the help of other people to ensure the dangers of CO are prominent in people's minds, most notably the vulnerable groups in society such as the elderly and university students living in low cost accommodation. KHMT has donated audible CO alarms to other charities to give to their most vulnerable clients. One recipient said: "Thank you so much. The autumn and winter are coming and I was a littled concerned about my gas fire which is why I approached you. Now I will be able to test the fire and be easy in my mind." KHMT has taken stands at the NUS Conference in Sheffield and university freshers' fayres and has spoken to students about the dangers of CO poisoning; alerted them to the necessity of ensuring their landlords regularly maintain all fuel appliances; and sold audible CO alarms at a very discounted rate. KHMT is particularly proud of the Public Information Film it made on YouTube (see charity link) raising awareness of the need for an audible CO alarm in the home and is in the process of commissioning another film. KHMT regularly attends meetings at the Houses of Parliament on the need to improve legislation and ways of raising more awareness of this 'silent killer'. KHMT feels that until things change, there is much more that needs to be done to keep people safe and we really need your help and donations to keep moving forward. THANK YOU

WOW Glasgow (UK, SC046304) Browse events

YTD Raised: £688.00

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2012. For me the worst part of all the treatments was losing my hair during chemotherapy. To buy a new wig costs a lot of money, so I decided to set up the WOW Glasgow to help all the “folically challenged” I found the process of obtaining a wig with my NHS voucher quite a cold experience and as I am a former hairdresser, I was determined that no other woman should be made to feel like that again! That’s why after a lot of work, we now accept NHS vouchers, so women know they are dealing with someone who has been in their situation. I decided to bring the WOW Glasgow to the West of Scotland and surrounding areas, so women, like me, could be made to feel relaxed and comfortable when choosing a wig that suits them. People donate their no longer needed wigs to us, we wash, condition and disinfect them, then sell them for £20. The money from each wig goes straight back to the women that need & deserve a bit of help when going through a difficult time. We pay for "Boxes of Strength" to be issued to women that have had a recent diagnosis. We are based at WOW Glasgow if you wish to donate a wig please send it to Amanda MacTaggart WOW Glasgow, 473 Dumbarton Road, Clydebank G81 4DT. Or if you wish to purchase a wig please give me a call on 0141-2372550 Please pass this information onto anyone you feel may benefit from this service. Much Love, Amanda
