The Conservation Volunteers (UK, 261009) Browse events

YTD Raised: £304.64

The Conservation Volunteers have been reclaiming green places since 1959. Right now, when one third of the UK's green places are in danger of being lost or degraded, our work is more important than ever. The everyday green places that people use are especially vulnerable. 10,000 playing fields were sold off between 1979 and 1997. And only 10% of the UK's allotments remain.  Places like these do not have special protection. They are all under threat at a time when local councils are cutting budgets. But neglecting green places is a false economy. It doesn't take long for a once-loved open space to become a magnet for anti-social behaviour, and a cost to society. So looking after green places isn't just about caring for nature.  It's about caring for people as well. A well-used green place is a classroom, a gym, a playground and a sanctuary.  It is a place that is good for people as well as for wildlife. The Conservation Volunteers help hundreds of thousands of people each year to reclaim local green places.  Through our own environmental projects and through our network of 2,000 community groups, we see people – every day, and all across the UK – taking responsibility for their own local environments. You can be part of it too. Join in, feel good.

Northumberland Wildlife Trust Limited (UK, 221819) Browse events

YTD Raised: £303.00

The wildlife conservation charity dedicated to protecting all species and habitats in Newcastle, Northumberland and North Tyneside. The North East’s unique variety of animals, plants and landscapes is increasingly under pressure from climate change, development on green spaces, intensive farming and pollution. There have been dramatic declines in red squirrels, water voles, barn owls and black grouse in just one generation. Northumberland Wildlife is committed to halting this decline in a number of ways. We manage over 60 local nature reserves and run projects which help threatened species. We work in partnership with companies, local authorities, communities, landowners, volunteers and other organisations to manage the landscape positively for wildlife and people. The Trust acts as the ‘voice of wildlife’ with local planners and developers. It is there to influence government policy at national level. Collectively The Wildlife Trusts lobbied the government successfully over the recently enacted Marine Bill, which will establish Marine Protected Areas around the North East coast. We educate thousands of people about nature each year, working directly with schools, running special events and clubs, and providing information. We believe the key to success is getting as many people involved in caring for their own environment, connecting local people with local places. We receive no direct government funding and rely on our supporters for much of our income. Without you we couldn’t do what we do. It’s a small price to pay for enriching our lives and ensuring that we protect what we have and pass it on to future generations.   ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ To donate to New Hauxley Vistor Centre Appeal please click on the link to the left. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hollie’s passion was hairdressing and her family wanted to give others the opportunity that Hollie was fortunate to have and fulfil a career in hairdressing. Application was made to the charity commission and on 25 April 2014, the Hollie Gazzard Trust, a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) was created. While the family are devastated and can’t change what has happened to Hollie, they hope the funds raised will help others.

Snow Leopard Trust (uk) Limited (UK, 1116101) Browse events

YTD Raised: £160.68

"HELPING  SNOW LEOPARDS SURVIVE  IN THE WILD THROUGH COMMUNITY BASED CONSERVATION AND GOOD SCIENCE" With possibly less than 7,000 snow leopards remaining in the wild our goal is to help save this magnificent species survive for future generations. We are a charity run by unpaid volunteers so our aim is that over 95p in every £1 raised can go directly to funding conservation projects in snow leopard habitat in central Asia. The principal 'THREATS' to the snow leopard's survival in the wild are as follows:- The snow leopard can however be SAVED from extinction through the continued expansion of the 5 core project areas we support  EDUCATION: We fund Eco-Education camps where rural children learn about their mountain environment, eco-system, snow leopards and their prey and are provided with “top up” schooling by teachers. These children will grow up to be their communities’ leaders and their attitudes and behaviour will be key to the snow leopard’s survival.  LIVESTOCK INSURANCE: We help set up sustainable livestock insurance programmes. When a member of an insurance programme loses livestock to a carnivore attack the livestock is replaced, thus preventing any retribution killings of snow leopards by the herder taking place.  ECONOMIC ENTERPRISE: Women herders typically get pennies rather than pounds when they sell raw wool fleece to traders. However when raw wool is spun in to yarn it fetches five times more in price. We purchase spinning  wheels for the women herders, train them to spin wool and make handicrafts and then provide an international market place to sell their finished products. By doing this a herder family’s annual income can double or treble and the participating herder families agree that no snow leopards will be killed in the landscape of their rural community.  LIVESTOCK VACCINATION:  In some areas herders lose more livestock to disease rather than predator attacks. By paying for the vaccination of their livestock the herders agree not to kill any snow leopards even if they lose some livestock to predators.   SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH:  Until recently relatively little was known about the behaviour of snow leopards living in the wild. We support the first long term scientific research camp based in the Tost Valley in the South Gobi. By monitoring population densities of snow leopards and their prey we can judge how best to support their survival in the wild. 'Every donation made to snow leopard conservation is important and gratefully received. Thank you for joining us in our mission to save this magnificent species from extinction, and helping some of the poorest people living on the fringes of the world improve their livelihoods.'
