Newquay Zoo is an education, research and conservation charity which is dedicated to protecting global wildlife heritage. We hope to inspire a life long respect for animals and the environment amongst our many visitors. Newquay Zoo was first opened in 1969, run by Restormel Council until 1994 when it was purchased and privately owned by Mike Thomas. After establishing the Zoo as a premier visitor attraction, he sold it in August 2003 to the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust (WWCT), a Devon based charity which also owns Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts in Torquay, as well as a number of nature reserves. The Zoo is proud to support overseas conservation programmes, helping conserve endangered species including red fronted macaws, pangolins and sloths. The Zoo also runs a highly successful breeding programme. All money raised through this page will help support our vital conservation work.

"HELPING SNOW LEOPARDS SURVIVE IN THE WILD THROUGH COMMUNITY BASED CONSERVATION AND GOOD SCIENCE" With possibly less than 7,000 snow leopards remaining in the wild our goal is to help save this magnificent species survive for future generations. We are a charity run by unpaid volunteers so our aim is that over 95p in every £1 raised can go directly to funding conservation projects in snow leopard habitat in central Asia. The principal 'THREATS' to the snow leopard's survival in the wild are as follows:- The snow leopard can however be SAVED from extinction through the continued expansion of the 5 core project areas we support EDUCATION: We fund Eco-Education camps where rural children learn about their mountain environment, eco-system, snow leopards and their prey and are provided with “top up” schooling by teachers. These children will grow up to be their communities’ leaders and their attitudes and behaviour will be key to the snow leopard’s survival. LIVESTOCK INSURANCE: We help set up sustainable livestock insurance programmes. When a member of an insurance programme loses livestock to a carnivore attack the livestock is replaced, thus preventing any retribution killings of snow leopards by the herder taking place. ECONOMIC ENTERPRISE: Women herders typically get pennies rather than pounds when they sell raw wool fleece to traders. However when raw wool is spun in to yarn it fetches five times more in price. We purchase spinning wheels for the women herders, train them to spin wool and make handicrafts and then provide an international market place to sell their finished products. By doing this a herder family’s annual income can double or treble and the participating herder families agree that no snow leopards will be killed in the landscape of their rural community. LIVESTOCK VACCINATION: In some areas herders lose more livestock to disease rather than predator attacks. By paying for the vaccination of their livestock the herders agree not to kill any snow leopards even if they lose some livestock to predators. SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH: Until recently relatively little was known about the behaviour of snow leopards living in the wild. We support the first long term scientific research camp based in the Tost Valley in the South Gobi. By monitoring population densities of snow leopards and their prey we can judge how best to support their survival in the wild. 'Every donation made to snow leopard conservation is important and gratefully received. Thank you for joining us in our mission to save this magnificent species from extinction, and helping some of the poorest people living on the fringes of the world improve their livelihoods.' We believe that the right to care about the planet is a universal one, regardless of background or upbringing. One of the biggest challenges for young people is poverty of aspiration. What greater aspiration could you give someone than a belief that they can positively change the future of the world? Our aim is to help students from inner city backgrounds to develop self-esteem, focus and direction through targeted exposure to multicultural, environmental, conservation and community experiences. clouddog is focussed on educating the youth of today, how to be the planet managers of tomorrow. We wish to see the number of students touched by our programme increase exponentially, not only changing the lives of those students involved but creating a nucleus of incredibly motivated young people with a real passion for environmental change and conservation projects. clouddog is an example of the passion that is now required for environmental change at a grass roots level making a sustained difference to our planet and to our youth.
