For young black South Africans like myself, it was Oxford and Cambridge, Harvard and Yale, all rolled into one”. In 2016, the University will celebrate 100 years of higher education for Africans at its campus at Alice, Eastern Cape — later the birthplace of the Freedom Charter, signed in 1955 as the blueprint for a future democratic South Africa. The Centenary Appeal is for a new Library at Alice, the student home of Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, two of South Africa's four Nobel Peace Laureates; of Oliver Tambo, Govan Mbeki, and a host of other leaders in politics, government, the professions, business and academia in South Africa and across the African continent. The Foundation also aims to promote interest in South Africa, especially in education in the still-impoverished Eastern Cape.
