Educating The Children (UK, 1139741) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

ETC stands for Educating The Children, which is exactly what we are doing in the Masai Mara, in Kenya and also in the UK (through our global learning programme). There are essentially two strands to ETC: (1) UK VOLUNTEER TEACHERS: go to teach in the Mara where classroom sizes are roughly 1 teacher to 100 pupils! They also exchange best practises with Kenyan teachers, and educate UK pupils on their return through real life examples of global learning. We provide them with the training to do that. (2) FARIJIKA SECONDARY SCHOOL: we have recently started building the first girls secondary school in the Masai Mara which will also act as a safe haven from female genital mutilation and forced childhood marriages. International research shows that investing in girls delivers a higher return than any other investment made in a community's development.

When we think about people living in poverty, the images that come to mindaren’t often of the communities that surround us. Yet in Britain today, 3.6 million children are growing up in households so poor, providing basics like heating andfood is a daily struggle. A child growing up in poverty can all too often become trapped in a downwardspiral of low educational achievement, inferior job opportunities and greatlyincreased chances of drug use, poor health and involvement with crime. In someareas they will even die sooner than their wealthier neighbour. We are Teach First and we think this is wrong. We are working towards a future where every child can succeed, regardless of their background. And we have seen how excellent classroom teachers can transform a child’s life opportunities. We recruit dynamic, passionate graduates and career-changers to teach in schools in low-income communities. We only work with schools where more than 50% of pupils come from the poorest homes. Only 4% of newly qualified teachers would consider working in these schools, but all of our teachers commit to working there for a minimum of two years. In ten years, more than 4,000 Teach First teachers have worked in over 500 schools. We are building a movement of leaders who will change the education system, eradicating educational disadvantage and making a meaningful impact on children, their families and communities.

YTD Raised: £0.00

The Uganda Humanist Schools Trust helps schools in Uganda working to offer liberal, secular education to needy children. Founded by Ugandan Humanists and run as charities, the schools are inclusive and welcome children from all religious, social and ethnic backgrounds. We aim to bring about positive improvements in students' day-to-day educational experiences and welfare and, in so doing, to enhance their life chances. Our charity provides scholarships (£120 day, £300 boarding) to enable bright but needy children to attend the schools. We support children who are orphans and from very poor homes. UHST arranges, through local suppliers, the provision of books, science materials, computers and software and other educational resources for art, music, sports and co-curricular activities. Although finding large-scale funds is challenging, we have also helped to enhance the general infrastructure of the schools we support. In recent years we have provided and equipped libraries, science and computer labs, refurbish classrooms and sports fields and built two hostels to provide safe homes for girl students. We also help to ensure that the schools have safe drinking water, clean toilets and electricity, using sustainable solar and hydro-power wherever possible.
