We nurture each individual’s potential in a culture that encourages successful learning and creative thinking while rewarding initiative and independence. Our aim is to give pupils the support and freedom they need to flourish into balanced, fully-rounded and confident adults who are inspired for life. Tutudesk UK (UK, 1148557) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

Imagine a child attending a school with no classroom desks. What would they write on? Image a teacher trying to read the work they’ve written whilst leaning on their friend’s back. Is it legible? Over 95 million school children in Sub Saharan Africa don't have the benefit of a classroom desk (worldwide, it's estimated at over 400m). This affects the development of literacy, academic performance and the ability to concentrate in class. A Tutudesk is a simple, low technology solution, a portable school desk. A child can place the Tutudesk on their lap, whether they are sitting on the floor or on a chair. It is lightweight, so children can also carry the desk home at the end of the day so that they can complete their homework and any further study. To date over 1 million desks have been distributed across 24 countries. Our goal is to provide a further 20m Tutudesks to 20m African children by 2015. Thank you for your support.

Click on 'Nick's Bike Ride' link on the left for the latest activity! « « « here The John Banner Scholarship Fund is a registered charity that strives for the: “PROVISION OF SCHOLARSHIP GRANTS, FINANCIAL SUPPORT AND PRIZES FOR COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS, WITHIN THE EAST MIDLANDS, INTENT ON A CAREER IN THE HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY.” It covers Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, and Nottinghamshire. John Banner was a Hotel and Catering lecturer at Southfields College (which is now Leicester College) and a Fellow of what was then the HCIMA. He left his legacy to the East Midlands to support the development and enrichment of students pursuing careers in the hotel and catering industry. The Hospitality Industry accounts for 1 in 14 of all UK jobs i.e. approx 2 million jobs. The public sector austerity measures will impact heavily on students enrolling on Hotel & Catering educational and training programmes in the coming years. Cuts in the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA), and Adult Funding and Entitlement will mean that the support of the John Banner Scholarship Fund will become fundamentally important to enable students to complete their studies and fulfil their career ambitions. Here are a few practical examples of ways in which the fund aims to help students, e.g.: Logo designed by www.aeriform.co.uk

JAKARTA EDUCATION FOUNDATION (UK, XT32975) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

The Jakarta Education Foundation (JEF) enables underprivileged Indonesian children to enjoy their basic rights to an education. There is almost no free schooling in Indonesia. With half of the country's 240 million people living on less than £1.25 per day, education is all too often a 'luxury' that families cannot afford. As a result, 40% of indonesian children do not continue their education beyond primary school. JEF covers the education costs of Indonesian children who would otherwise drop out of school. JEF has already helped to improve the lives of dozens of children whom it has sponsored to go to school. Four of JEFs alumni are currently at university, where one is studying graphic design, two are studying communications, and another is training to be a teacher. Other JEF alumni have found work in a range of jobs which would have been beyond their reach had they not graduated from high school. They include one who is working as an IT programmer and another who is a junior accountant in a market research company. JEF was founded, and is run by, Tessa Piper, a British national who is the Jakarta-based Asia Director of a US media development non-profit organization who has lived and worked in Indonesia for almost 20 years and speaks fluent Indonesian. Tessa's management of the foundation involves extensive interaction with the children who receive educational support from JEF, and she maintains contact with them throughout their years of sponsorship and often for long afterwards. She does this through regular meetings with the children, during which she assesses their progress both in and out of school. This includes reviewing with each of the children their six monthly school reports, based on which they together agree achievable targets for improvement designed to help them to achieve their full potential. 100% of all money donated to JEF is used to cover the education costs of the children and the number of children assisted through JEF is only limited by the funds available. If you would like to help a child to get the education they deserve, please donate whatever you can, and JEF will do the rest.

Gift For Ghana (UK, 1150574) Browse events

YTD Raised: £0.00

A charitable trust. Our aim is simple but profound; to alleviate poverty through literacy. Object of the charity: To advance the education of pupils in Tamale, northern Ghana. When working in Ghana we were introduced to a remarkable school - the Gbewaa School in Tamale. There are around 400 eager children in attendance aged between 2 and 12. The school is an indispensible part of its community. Many children at the school are orphans or have lost a parent. With no outside funding, Jemilatu - the inspirational Headteacher - supports the school herself, however she is able to. She devotes herself to the school, firm in the knowledge that in the poorest parts of northern Ghana, education is the primary hope the children and the community in Tamale have to break their cycle of poverty. Jemilatu’s cause is a noble one. With the support of many philanthropists, Gift for Ghana successfully raised the funds as a small charity to build new classrooms for Gbewaa school. The benefit to Gbewaa school has been dramatic. Now we are developing our charitable activity and will become a charitable trust. We endeavour to provide water and electricity to the school as well as to facilitate a rich educational experience between two very different and remarkable schools. Rarely in life does a human being have a remarkable opportunity to positively change the life of another. Rarer still are the chances in life to positively revolutionise a community of people. Investment in this school will allow more children to benefit from the gift of literacy and education, provide opportunities to break the cycle of poverty and give hope to a new generation. On behalf of the staff and pupils of Gbewaa school, as well as the trustees, thank you!
