Our aim is to ensure that children have the knowledge, skills and self-confidence to make healthy choices and to avoid risky behaviours. All our programmes are delivered by specially trained Educators. The programmes for Primary School children are delivered in a purpose-built mobile classroom, or 'Life Bus', and include role play, music, drama and specially made film to get our healthy messages across. All of the programmes feature Harold the giraffe - our puppet mascot - who is loved by all the children. Programme modules for older pupils - on drugs, alcohol or smoking - are delivered in the school classroom. For every school we visit we need to raise £335 each day. With your help we can ensure that the young children of Dorset, Devon, Somerset and Hampshire stay healthy and happy. If you would like to take part in Harold's 1,000 Challenges (it's free!) and help us raise much needed funds by undertaking a sponsored activity or challenge of your choice, please click on the 'Start Fundraising' link above. The charity (www.afetuk.org) is small and very cost effective. It aims to break the cycle of poverty of the rural poor in Ecuador via the support of education, health and welfare of children in Ecuador. It is known that rural children tend to leave school as soon as possible to go to work on the streets of the nearest city or on the land earning a pittance. They drop out of school because their parents can't afford to keep them there or because English and Computer Studies are required at secondary school. City children get these subjects at the primary level and are way ahead, rural children struggle to keep up. AFET sets up computer teaching centres in schools or communities (1-3 at a time), where computer skills are taught, and if English speaking volunteers are present teach English as well. Adult courses are also run if there is a demand. A lending library is available to encourage reading for pleasure, and this has been an unexpected and resounding success. Individual children can be sponsored (currently £210 per year), which is conditional on their staying at school, and a health fund as well as a building fund also exist. The former enables parents to seek a doctor's advice, buy medicines or treatment prescribed, which is an enormous relief to these poverty stricken familes. The building fund tries to improve hygeine by supporting the building of water closets and washing facilities in the family home (often just a mud floored shack), to decrease the prevalence of diaorrhea and vomiting bugs, and hepatitis. Do look at our web site and that of the Ecuadorian charity we work through (www.voluntariosdeoccidente.org). Donations are well used and always welcome, reports can be sent if you wish. Voluntarios are always looking for volunteers of almost any age. Mature volunteers are very welcome.

Our charity is passionate about the importance of literacy and tackling the problems of low literacy and its effect on the whole of our community. We help schools in the Sheerwater and Maybury areas of Woking where it has been found that as many as one in three children are starting Secondary School with a reading age of seven or lower. We provide volunteer tutors to schools and also give in excess of 3000 free books to children in schools in our area per year. By targeting children struggling to read at primary level we aim to help children overcome their difficulties at an early age. We use the synthetic phonics system developed by Ruth Miskin to help children with their reading. This year, 2010/2011 we have worked with four primary schools in the Woking area: Maybury Infants, Brookwood Primary, St John’s, and New Monument. With one-to-one tutor support for just one hour a week, over a period of 26 weeks, we have seen some of our pupils’ reading ages improve from not being able to read at all to having a reading age of 6 or 7 (equivalent to their chronological ages -our best results to date!). In addition to remedial tuition, we also give free books to children who have little access to books at home. Recent research from Nevada University has found that having as few as 20 books in the home can boost a child’s chances in life. This year we’ve given out books to 976 young people from 13 schools in the area. Each term, during the school year, the children participating in our scheme choose a book from a list of books provided. These books are presented to the children and are theirs to keep forever. We attach a bookplate to the inside front cover of each book which shows the child’s name and also has our logo to remind them in the future of the help they were given by us. We depend wholly upon charitable donations for the work that we do and all our tutors work on a voluntary basis. You can help us give the Gift of Reading to around 1000 local children each year: If you are a local business just think what 1% of your profits would do to help improve literacy of the young needy people of Woking. They are your future employees! Please help if you can. Every penny donated goes directly to this cause.
