Wherever the Need is the only UK charity that puts sanitation first. Clean water is also vitally important to help save lives, but without efective sanitation in place, water supplies continue to become contaminated. Its not just us that says this - research has shown that the installation of ‘improved sanitation’ shows a reduction in illness by an average of 32%, whereas an improved water supply only does so by 6%. We provide ecologically sustainable composting toilets which are long-lasting, and provide valuable fertiliser which can be used on crops. With proper sanitation in place, we then make sure there is clean drinking water available. With both sanitation and water in place, peoples health vastly improves, enabling them to maintain employment and stay in education. Our last step is to create livelihood programmes where they are needed, so people have the opportunity for sustained employment. Good health and an income leads to a route out of poverty, and that is what we are all about!
