The First World War was a turning point in world history. It claimed the lives of over 16 million people across the globe and had an impact on the lives of everyone. One hundred years on, we are all connected to the First World War, either through our own family history the heritage of our local communities or because of its long term impact on society and the world we live in today. IWM (Imperial War Museums) is leading the nation’s commemorative activities, working with the government and heritage institutions around the globe to engage both local and international communities in the causes, course, and consequences of the war. At IWM London, part of IWM, we will open new ground-breaking First World War Galleries in Summer 2014. Visitors will discover the story of the First World War through the eyes of those who experienced it on the front line and the home front. Drawing upon our collections - the richest and most comprehensive in the world - the Galleries will explore how the war started, why it continued, how it was won and its impact. Objects large and small, many of which have never been exhibited before, from weapons and uniforms through to diaries, letters and souvenirs, will sit alongside photographs, art and film. Your support will help us to tell more of the important, and as yet unheard, stories in our new First World War Galleries, IWM’s major contribution to the Centenary Programme in 2014.

Founded in 1822, the Royal Academy of Music’s impact on musical life, both in the UK and abroad, is inestimable. The music profession is permeated at all levels with Academy alumni, including classical giants Sir Simon Rattle and Sir Harrison Birtwistle and pop stars Sir Elton John and Annie Lennox. Every year talented young musicians from over fifty countries come to study at the Academy, attracted by renowned teachers and a rich artistic culture that broadens their musical horizons, develops their professional creativity, and fosters their entrepreneurial spirit. Our students benefit from an unrivalled calendar of concerts, operas, musical theatre shows and other events, in which they work regularly with leading practitioners. All these facets of Academy life contribute to what The Guardian has recently described as the Academy’s ‘cosmopolitan confidence that is in tune with the global music industry’. The Academy’s museum is home to one of the world’s most significant collections of instruments and artefacts, including stringed instruments by Stradivari, Guarneri and the Amati family; manuscripts by Purcell, Handel and Vaughan Williams; and an incomparable and growing collection of performing materials that belonged to eminent musicians. As the Academy approaches its bicentenary it goes from strength to strength. It has recently been rated the best conservatoire for research and the second-highest rated institution in the country for student satisfaction. The Guardian has rated it top of the country’s specialist institutions and, three years in succession, the best place to study music in Britain.

The RSCM is driven by our mission to bring good music, well composed and well made, to worship. From magazines, music, and books to awards schemes, residential courses, and distance learning; from training for organists to getting pianists onto the organ seat for the first time; from Voice for Life singing and choral education to courses for cathedral singers -- if it is about church music anywhere in the world, the RSCM is there.  We support and enable musicians, composers, directors, singers, instrumentalists, and clergy of many traditions and styles. We field Regional Music Advisers to help our volunteer committees put on events, bring young people to church music, take music to churches that do not have any, and promote best practice.  In the Salisbury administrative centre, our dedicated staff assists with the myriad support needs of working church musicians:  contracts, commissioning of music and articles, distance and on-site courses, the Sunday by Sunday liturgy planner, licensing and copyright … and much more. The RSCM is funded through membership dues (organisational and individual), publication sales, and course fees. But to sustain our 4,500 UK members, 1,500 Friends, 600 volunteers, and 2,500 international members, we must also receive charitable gifts and legacies from generous individuals who understand the value of music in worship.  Support us today!

YTD Raised: £0.00

Preserving the 400 year history of Stourbridge Glass.   The British Glass Foundation is a new charity created in response to the prospective closure of Broadfield House Glass Museum. The Foundation -seeks to represent all other charities, organisations and individuals that have an interest in preserving our glass heritage.continues to raise the profile of the importance, locally, nationally and internationally, of the Dudley glass collections and archives.aims to work closely in partnership with Dudley Council, the principal custodian of the glass collections, to accomplish its objectives.is exploring other means to provide access to the collections and is liaising with the University of Wolverhampton to produce a digital record of the collections and archive. The Unique Importance Of Broadfield House Glass Museum The glass collections on display at Broadfield Houses Glass Museum, and in store at Himley Hall, represent one of the finest holdings of British 18th, 19th and 20th century glass in the world. Numbering some ten thousand items, the Collection includes stunning examples from every major period of glass production in this country, the highlight being cameo glass, the speciality of Stourbridge factories at the end of the 19th century.  The Museum has benefited from major bequests especially that of Michael Parkington which extended and completed Broadfield’s collection of 18th century glass.  The Museum has also saved iconic collections including that of the great 20th century glass designer Alexander Hardie Williamson. The Museum also owns important glass archive material e.g. pattern books from Stevens & Williams, Richardson’s and Thomas Webb & Sons, together with two major glass libraries from Robert J. Charleston, former Curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and H. Jack Haden, a local historian who amassed a valuable collection of local Stourbridge material, as well as many other documents, letters, photographs and films. The glass library owned by the Museum is one of the finest in the country and includes the complete microfiche catalogue of original glass catalogues owned by the Corning Museum of Glass in America, the only museum in this country to own this valuable research facility.  Glass making equipment is collected to complement the glass and the archive collections.  Notable pieces include the only surviving “Pull-Up” machine invented by John Northwood I in the 1880’s to decorate glass ware at Stevens & Williams, and a rare complete example of a Bohemian copper-wheel engraving lathe which was used by the great Joseph Keller.  In the 1980’s the Museum rescued the  foundations of an entire 17th century glass furnace from the estate of Sir Charles Wolseley near Rugeley, Staffordshire.  Since it opened in 1980 Broadfield has pursued a vibrant and exciting policy of temporary exhibitions, often drawn from European and American collections and complements them with erudite and learned catalogues.  This incredible combination of glass, archives, equipment and an active educational policy, justify Broadfield’s claim to be the “The Museum of The British Glass Industry”.  Even now, some 400 years after glassmaking began in Stourbridge, its work continues.
