YTD Raised: £1,070.00

The ability to get around is vital in order to live a full life yet thousands of blind and partially sighted people never leave home alone. Guide Dogs empowers visually impaired people to do that and relies totally on the support of the public to fund the guide dog service. We breed and train guide dogs which provide life changing mobility and there are currently 4,500 working guide dog partnerships in the UK. The full lifetime cost of a guide dog from birth to retirement is £48,500. We will not rest until blind and partially sighted people can enjoy the same freedom of movement as everyone else. The OHMI Trust (UK, 1143623) Browse events

YTD Raised: £1,060.00

A charity breaking down barriers to music making for physically disabled people. Orchestral instruments that can be played without two fully functioning hands are extremely rare. This denies unlimited participation in musical life, at the highest level, to millions, including people with congenital disabilities and amputees as well as those who may have been injured, suffered a stroke or developed arthritis. The primary obstacle is the absence of suitable instruments. Finding instruments... The OHMI Trust was formed in 2011 and is doing ground breaking work by solving this problem through an annual competition. Through the competition we now have instruments of an exceptionally high standard that are playable without the use of one hand/arm. With these instruments, the OHMI Trust is launching a pioneering music teaching project in Birmingham, where 15 children aged between 7 and 11 years of age with an upper limb disability have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument. The children will work with world class musicians from the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and get the best quality teaching from specially selected teachers from Services for Education in Birmingham. This is an extroardinary opportunity for children with upper limb disabilities to learn alongside their peers, without any limitations imposed by their instrument. Teaching instruments... The OHMI Trust is currently raising funds to roll this pilot scheme out to Bristol and Surrey in the near future and aims eventually for this provision to become part of core music education, so having a disability is not a barrier to music-making at the highest level. Raising awareness of the current inequality... We also do what we can to raise awareness with governments, musical instrument makers and others so that together we can work towards practical solutions that will allow those with physical disabilities have completely equal access to musical participation at whatever level they choose. All donations will help OHMI to continue our extroardinary work in breaking down barriers to music participation for those with disabilities.

Attitude is Everything (UK, 1121975) Browse events

YTD Raised: £999.62

Attitude is Everything supports the music industry to make live music events more accessible. Having begun as a pilot project in 2000, we are now a fully independent charity and part of Arts Council England’s National Portfolio of Organisations. We encourage events producers to go beyond legal obligations set out in The Equality Act and implement Best Practice, providing a fair and equal service to their Deaf and disabled customers. “I started to work in partnership with Attitude is Everything because they gave me practical solutions to real challenges.”  Melvin Benn, Festival Republic. We challenged the status quo with two innovative creations. The Attitude is Everything Charter of Best Practice encourages live venue promoters to publicly show their commitment to improving access. Club Attitude is held in fully accessible venues and features a mix of live performers (both disabled and non-disabled), attracting guest slots from artists including Mystery Jets, Slow Club, Foals and Art Brut and DJ sets from Ghostpoet, Alan McGee, DJ Void and Alexa Chung. Our many successes to date include working with Festival Republic on all of their UK Festivals, supporting Academy Music Group and National Arena Association venues to sign to our Charter, and using the Charter of Best Practice as an event standard for all festivals taking place on Victoria Park. Our Access Toolkit: Making Outdoor Arts Events Accessible to All was awarded the London 2012 Inspire Mark.
