The Margaret O'Dwyer Trust Fund (IE, MYC0210) Browse events

YTD Raised: €0.00

At aged 15 Margaret had the symptoms of Schwannomatosis but as the condition wasn't identified yet It took almost 3 years of tests and of the doctors telling her family that she had nothing more than growing pains for them to finally operate and find a large tumour wrapped around the bottom of my spine .That was removed and I was sent home to recover never imagining what was ahead.About 2 years later Margaret was back in hospital to have another one removed from her armpit and then her calf. After that she had a series of 13 other operations from her neck to the base of her spine removing or debulking tumours. By this stage Margaret had missed her Leaving Cert while she was trying to find out what was wrong. While her friends moved to college she was lying in bed in pain all day.Around this time she got a call from a Professor Andrew Green to say a gene had been identified for a new condition called Schwannomatosis and he thought that was what Margaret had. The gene was INI1 and I was positive.Schwannomatosis causes tumours to grow on nerves and causes severe uncontrollable pain. Margaret was told there was approximately 4 other people in the country with it .Because the pain was so severe she had a morphine pump fitted which released morphine through the body at hourly intervals combined with oral meds. This didn't work and the pain got worse .A further scan showed multiple tumours all over her spine and pelvis which were unoperable but by then Margaret was practically housebound from the painEventually Margaret was sent to CUH by ambulance for pain relief by her GP and the surgeon agreed to operate again. When he did Margaret picked up sepsis with complete organ failure and was put into a induced coma. She wasn't given much chance of survival.Thankfully Margaret survived but when she awoke from the coma Margaret was paralysed both from the waist down and her right arm. After fighting infection after infection she was finally sent to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire. There they brought a lot of power back to her arm and hand. They also helped with her legs and though Margaret will never walk again they taught her to use the wheelchair and strengthen her upper body. Now Margaret is at home and needs to be as independent as possible but without the correct equipment such as the proper wheelchair, the correct size kitchen, essential exercise equipment, on-going medical care and an adapted car etc., it is almost impossible to achieve independence. Margaret would like to thank everyone who has donated to her cause. It is greatly appreciated.

Irish M.E. Trust. (IE, CHY10276) Browse events

YTD Raised: €0.00

The Irish ME Trust is the national association for sufferers of the neurological condition of ME (myalgic encephalomyelitis), also known as CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome). Our primary role is one of information, referral and counselling, although we further involve ourselves in research, lobbying the department of health for the establishment of a diagnostic clinic, and generally catering to the individual requests of members. We believe that only through proper diagnosis of this illness, can sufferers be given the proper advice on treatment and in turn save the State large amounts on monies which could be better utilized elsewhere. Although a difficult condition to diagnose, we believe that ME is an exercise intolerant illness and the initial advice to exercise can have consequences for ME sufferers. Diagnosis is therefore key. Further information on this is contained in our information pack on request from [email protected]

Katie Nugent Fund (IE, MYC0073) Browse events

YTD Raised: €0.00

Whatever creed, colour or social background we belong to, we are united as human beings by our love for our children. Having a seriously ill child in hospital fragments the tightest of families, physically as well as spiritually… for single parents the implications are even harder to imagine.Chemotherapy treatment is supposed to attack the illness but it attacks the spirit too. Throughout her illness, Katie retained her normal joie de vivre, and in doing so helped us to remain strong. It is not so easy for every family, and no parent should experience the despair that arises when abject misery replaces the normal optimism and innocence that has previously defined your child. Therefore the Katie Nugent Fund has been established within the CMRF to provide psychological and emotional support for the children on St John’s Ward in Crumlin, and their families, throughout the period of their treatment. Nick, Alice and Lucy Nugent
