Most families take recreational play for granted. For families of children with special needs, this is impossible for some and extremely difficult for most. The aim of Swings and Smiles is to provide a fun and safe facility where children can enjoy play appropriate to their needs and abilities.

Middle Temple has been awarding scholarships on a substantial basis since 1877. Its primary purpose is to ensure that those of real ability (and whom it believes can succeed) are not precluded from coming to the Bar by a lack of financial resources. The principal criteria for awarding scholarships are the quality of the applicant and his/her commitment to the principles of independent practice. All scholarships are awarded on merit. Once identified as a scholar of the Inn, the amount awarded is tailored to ensure that significant assistance is given to those able students most in need. Middle Temple interviews every single applicant for a scholarship and, uniquely, always takes account of means when assessing the value of any scholarship awarded. The Inn believes that it has a track record of funnelling the money where it is most needed and to people, regardless of their background, who will ultimately be a credit to the profession and the administration of justice.

The Wessex Neurological Centre serves a population of 3 million throughout central southern England & the Channel Islands. Having successfully raised £80,000 to provide a dedicated 'critical care' ambulance, and £145,000 to fund the creation of a Paediatric Video-Telemetry Suite (used to assess children with severe Epilepsy as to their suitability for life-changing corrective surgery), our latest appeal aims to raise a further £200,000 for our most ambitious project to date - the Fluorescence Enhanced Neurosurgery Appeal. Surgeons at the Centre perform vascular neurosurgery (to repair aneurysms, haemorrhages and the like), on hundreds of patients each year. By equipping one of the Centre's operating theatres with a new, state-of-the-art operating microscope fitted with the FL800 Fluorescence system, most of these patients will benefit. Fluorescence Enhanced Neurosurgery enables surgeons to clearly visualise blood-flow in adjacent brain tissue, reducing the possibility of either a recurrence of the bleed, or of a post-operative stroke. Nuzzlets is a small Charity based near York. Our objectives are to provide loving homes for unwanted animals and free access to all children for therapy and education. Particularly welcome are disabled and special needs children and children with life threatening illnesses. We offer many services to the local and wider community and are keen to involve the local community in our work. As many of our animals have been mistreated, we try to educate young people about the cost and long term commitment of looking after animals. We run an animal welfare club, offer work experience, deliver talks to the Beavers, Young Farmers, St John’s Ambulance Cadets and school assemblies. We also visit after school clubs and encourage Duke of Edinburgh students to carry out their service section at Nuzzlets. Activities include walking goats and rabbits, goat and rabbit agility, collecting eggs and stroking all the animals. Many disabled, special needs and terminally ill children visit Nuzzlets, either with their special schools, their families or with the children’s hospice. We also take the animals to the children’s hospice; the animals encourage movement and have a therapeutic effect. More recently we have visited deprived family groups and disabled adults have visited us. We arrange children’s birthday parties for disabled and special needs children. Everyone benefits, both the animals and the children.
