The Julia Thomson Memorial Trust (UK, SC039096) Browse events

YTD Raised: £3,650.00

The charity funds part of the activities of the Jardim dos Anjos (Garden of Angels) project in Canavieiras Brazil which was originally started by Italians. The project aims for "joined up thinking" in mentoring children right through from early childhood to the work place. They start in the creche and progress to the Julia centre. How much of the money raised actually reaches the school? All of it. The Julia Trust pays no salaries or expenses and the trustees personally fund the annual audit fees. We take children on a day care basis from broken homes and the poorest backgrounds and in conjunction with whatever family they have, give them whatever support we can. They first come to the creche from the age of three and we do literally everything for them. They are given a simple uniform so we can wash their home clothes, we teach them hygiene, how to clean their teeth, we feed them, we initiate them into simple routines that include the discipline of learning and we instil from the start strong values of kindness, good manners and respect for each other. A huge effort is made to educate the girls away from pregnancy aged 13 or 14. In parallel we run classes to teach the mothers home hygiene and cooking with a programme of regular home visits. When the children move from the creche to the compulsory state school system which operates for mornings only, the Julia centre is available in the afternoons where in addition to organised sport and fun activities they do back up class work. The state local schools haven't enough teachers and the kids are routinely sent away early without doing any lessons at all. There is no "them and us" feeling with the state school system and the town education department help fund one of our support teachers.
