We are now throwing a lifeline to all those who are living with the debilitating impact of Covid-19: Long Covid Recognition: We promote recognition and understanding, and use our voice to emphasise the importance of supporting people with Long Covid by working closely with government departments and ministers, institutions including the NHS, NIHR, ONS and NICE and international bodies such as the WHO. Research: We campaign for research into Long Covid, carry out our own surveys, and collaborate with researchers, including and promoting the voice of those with lived experience in a number of publicly-funded research projects. We advocate for appropriate, inclusive and relevant research and have representation on expert panels informing research priorities. Rehabilitation: We have had an ongoing dialogue with NHS England since August 2020, with regular meetings and updates to share information. We have been members of the Long Covid National Taskforce since its inception and have provided vital data through several surveys and reports.
The Gordon Howard MBE Memorial Trust was set up in 2018 in memory of Major Gordon Howard, who dedicated his life to caring for the elderly in Zimbabwe. With the founder Sir Athol Evans, he set up and grew the Athol Evans Hospital Home (now Athol Evans Complex) from a small frail care ward to a unique facility in Harare offering three levels of care to those who are sick, elderly, frail and vulnerable, and those in need of respite and rehabilitation. He campaigned for the elderly in Zimbabwe and worked tirelessly to improve the lives of pensioners, ultimately being recognised for his work with an MBE from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2008. The Trust was set up after Major Howard’s death to support the work that he started by supporting homes in Zimbabwe which in turn care for the elderly. Pensioners in Zimbabwe have suffered immensely over the years due to hyperinflation, and ongoing economic difficulties. Unfortunately there are little or no social services to help older people and many rely on care homes to survive. These homes rely on funding and donations to keep going.
